i cannot afford a robot.

i literally walk in straight lines with a broom and bare feet. going back over things 2 or 3 times.

this works for me. i do the same with any mirrors or surfaces, clean in lines and repeat.

then just walk around the floor barefoot to see if it still feels dirty.

are they usually the same type of spot, like maybe your robot is not very good at corners or a certain bit of your house. then you can just take more care to clean those areas.

I can't see dirt on any surfaces, but I still try to help with cleaning and strangely enough I'm even pickier than my wife about having everything spotless because I've always been paranoid about it since I can't see it. You will definitely be able to feel dirt on floors with your feet. I use a vacuum to get loose dirt, because it's hard for me to sweep and move a dirt pile around without making a mess. The best way to scrub them is to use a mop over the main areas and go over everything multiple times, then go over the edges on your hands and knees with a rag. Other surfaces like mirrors are harder, but all you can really do is go in a methodical pattern. I always go over everything at least twice. Also rinse or replace your rag often so you're not just moving around dirt and streaking things up.

you have gotten good replies and I will therefor only add that if your mother is anything like mine, it will never be clean enough

Haha. We might have to refer OP to r/relationships.

Walk around barefoot. Especially check corners and baseboards. I have a rumba mop like mentioned above, and that does do a great job. I also have a cordless stick vacuum I use because I am a dreadful sweeper. Just try and clean in a grid pattern, and like I said pay special attention to corners, under cupboards, etc

When one robot isn't enough, add another one! The iRobot Braava series are mop robots which will leave your floors squeaky clean. Beep boop!

You can also get a cleaning service, to be fair. I can definitely use a set of working eyes once in a while.

Do cleaning services do apartments? Mine is only 700 sq ft
nkdeck07 3 points 1y ago
Yes and they tend to be much cheaper as a result.
MostlyBlindGamer 2 points 1y ago
Sure, why not? They might have a minimum number of hours billed, but they should still make those count.

Do consider the other tips though. You'll definitely feel the dust and dirt on your bare feet.

Maybe not have your mom over anymore? Seems obsessed with a visual persons version, wanting to apply her world view onto yours. Id assume you are already cleaning far beyond what is necessary for health reasons, your mom should appreciate the effort, and not be so critical. My 2 cents
complex-blobfish 2 points 1y ago
that is actually a really good point. hope OP sees this.

sometimes i think my own mother is making up the mess, or at least exaggerating how much dust she comes across.

i personally don't understand why i would clean my front garden steps, but apparently people will make judgements about me based upon the mud on the step outside my house.

like it is outside, the outside is muddy, that is why i have a doormat out there, so you don't bring it inside.

sighted people need to chill, if it is not a health hazard or in the way, it shouldn't matter.

Work in a grid pattern, aka move in square shapes so you’re less likely to miss a spot while sweeping or mopping also getting good at feeling things with your feet is helpful for day to day cleaning, just make sure to love slow in case of sharp things.

For mirrors Using a dry paper towel across cleaned surface…if it moves smoothly, probably clean. If it gets stuck, probably still some dirt and grime.

Floors, require breaking the area into smaller, more manageable segments.

Organized and systematic pattern for covering surfaces.

Overlapping strokes to cover areas a few times.

Increasing frequency it is carried out

Preventative cleanup and over cleaning

Tactile check to feel if the area is clean.

Building a routine, have an idea of a “schedule” of typical home management activities.

Get a swiffer if you have smooth, I.e. hardwood/linoleum floors.

I do not have anything helpful to add, but I am really relieved other people have this problem and it is not just me haha. My dad and stepmom think I am a slob, but I do try to clean haha.
