My solution has been lots of lamps around the room: some floor lamps in various corners and then some hanging lamps closer to the middle of the room (or at least along the edges where the walls meet the ceiling). Aesthetically, I like those paper lantern style hanging lamps; they come in many different prints and colors, and you can get different lengths of cord depending on how far from an outlet your lamp will be. I know having lots of lamps isn't the best solution from an environmental perspective, but it's what works for me. Also as far as aesthetics, get the soft white bulbs, which cast a warmer glow, rather than the daylight bulbs, which cast a bluish glow. It makes the space more inviting, in my opinion.

Uplighting behind furniture can be affective and aesthetically pleasing.
