Living room lighting that’s bright but aesthetically pleasing? (self.Blind)
submitted by coffee4jesus16
My living room is poorly lit. I have a floor lamp to try to make up for it but it’s often not enough, as I like to work in my living room. I really don’t want to bring a work lamp out to the coffee table to do some reading but my ability to see in lower light is decreasing so I know I need to make some sort of a change.

My vision most goes blurry around computer screen distance so reading isn’t really a problem normally, but god, at night it’s like I can’t get my kitchen or living room bright enough. I’ve asked others if they have problems when they’re over and it’s definitely a me thing.

Are there any aesthetically pleasing lamps that also give good light? Am I not buying the right light bulb? Do I just need to suck it up and put a work lamp on my coffee table? My coffee table pulls up into a work station so it wouldn’t be too insane of a concept to have it there but I just don’t like the idea of extra clutter on my coffee table.

Am I missing a clever, or hell, an obvious, idea?

My solution has been lots of lamps around the room: some floor lamps in various corners and then some hanging lamps closer to the middle of the room (or at least along the edges where the walls meet the ceiling). Aesthetically, I like those paper lantern style hanging lamps; they come in many different prints and colors, and you can get different lengths of cord depending on how far from an outlet your lamp will be. I know having lots of lamps isn't the best solution from an environmental perspective, but it's what works for me. Also as far as aesthetics, get the soft white bulbs, which cast a warmer glow, rather than the daylight bulbs, which cast a bluish glow. It makes the space more inviting, in my opinion.

Uplighting behind furniture can be affective and aesthetically pleasing.

I have a hanging lamp over my couch that I use to read. I think they're called swag lamps? You can buy a cord and lampshade that you like and a light bulb for the needed brightness.
