Accessible Rubik's Cube tutorials? (self.Blind)
submitted by mehgcap
Hello all,

I've had an $1 for a couple years, but haven't made much progress with it. When I got it, I tried to research ways of solving it, but didn't find much that was truly helpful.

Does anyone know if there are resources to explain the Rubik's Cube which are accessible? Most are either videos that don't explain much, or are articles that rely on images for the bulk of their explanations.

Do you just need the methodology to solve the rubik's cube explained. I assume it translates similarly? Or are you trying to do speed cubing?

I just want the various methods explained. I don't care as much about the speed.

Here is how I solve the cube.It is broken down into three layers.First lets define some terms.

Each side of cube is defined by the piece in the center. This is important because these pieces don't move and help you establish orientation.

Each side of a cube has one center piece.

Each side of cube has four corners pieces.

They make an X through the center piece.

Each side of the cube has 4 edge pieces.

They make a cross through the center piece.

The easiest way to solve the cube is generally to do so in layers.

I also feel this will be the easiest with a symbol cube.

So people generlaly solve them from the bottom layer up.

The moves you will use.

Moves

R: Rotate the side on your right hand side 1 turn clockwise

Ri: Rotate the side on your right hand side 1 turn counterclockwise

L: Rotate the side on your left hand side 1 turn clockwiseLi: Rotate the side on your left hand side 1 turn counterclockwise

U: Rotate the side on your up side 1 turn clockwiseUi: Rotate the side on your up side 1 turn counterclockwise

D: Rotate the side on your down side 1 turn clockwiseDi: Rotate the side on your down side 1 turn counterclockwise

F: Rotate the side on your front side 1 turn clockwiseFi: Rotate the side on your front side 1 turn counterclockwise

B: Rotate the side on your back side 1 turn clockwiseBi: Rotate the side on your back side 1 turn counterclockwise

Orienting the cube is generally just turning the whole cube in your hand until one specific face or piece is at a certain position. This means turning the whole cube in your hand.

The first layer:

You will first need to decide one thing for your cube. Which side will be down. That is the first layer we will solve.

Choose one of the symbols to represent down and find the side of cube with that symbol in the center. This will then face down. The opposite side of this will be up.

The first thing that people generally do is learn to make a flower with top symbol surrounded by the bottom symbols on the edges. So this means the center of up will be surrounded like cross with the bottom symbols to make a cross like shape.

The edge pieces need to have the bottom symbol facing up and the connecting symbol on the edge match to the center piece on each side.

This is the first step in the first layer

To get the first edge of your cross take your cube with the symbol you choose facing down. And find a down symbol on the edge. Then rotate it until it faces up.

Once it faces up, Twist the top part until it matches one of the center pieces on side.

That piece should not move as we solve the other parts.

Now you are going to look for your other bottom edge pieces. you are going to manipulate them until you match the corresponding symbol attached to it, to the center of that symbol.

Once this is done rotate them up.

Do this until you have the cross, with the up center, surrounded on the edges by all the bottom edges.

Check to make sure that edge pieces match up with the side centers.

Once this is done, You rotate each side two turns.

Now the bottom should have all the edge pieces in place.

You can check this by making sure the cross fits. and then making sure on each side that the bottom edge piece aligns with the center.

Now will take care of the corners.

Feel the cube and find the bottom corner pieces.

We are going to use one of two moves here.

You are looking for a bottom corner piece that is in the top row. Find a piece like this.

If there are no corner pieces in the top row. Find one in the bottom row.

Once you find the piece, if it is on your right hand side

R, U, Ri

If it is on the left hand side

Li, Ui, L

So, now you will have the pieces positioned.

So now you should have a bottom symbol piece on the top row of one of your sides. Feel for the symbol that is connected to it on side pieces. Match that symbol to its center by rotating the top row of the cube U until it matches the with the proper center piece.

Once you find the piece, i
f it is on your right hand side R, U, Ri
If it is on the left hand side
Li, Ui, LSo,
now you will have the pieces positioned.

if you have a corner piece with the bottom symbol facing up or on the up side of the cube. Find the unsolved corner on the bottom and orient it to the corner piece to where it is on the front and right. Rotate the top until it is in bottom corner piece is in the exact same position.

R, Ui, Ri

Then continue with the above steps where you are moving the top corners to the bottom. If you have done everything correct, you should have finished the first layer, the down layer. All of the bottom cube should be completely solved. The bottom layer on each side should all be the same symbol and it should match the center symbol.

Do this a few times until it becomes easy and let me know.

Also any problems just put here. Anyone see some mistakes let me know. Once you have this down, we can move to the second layer. The easiest layer.

I recently solved my cube using these resources:

https://ruwix.com/the-rubiks-cube/how-to-solve-the-rubiks-cube-beginners-method/

https://freshcuber.de/rubiks-cube-part1/

I find the explanations are sufficiently clear to follow with some care.

Good luck!

Not sure about best accessible sources for the basic algorithms/method, but if you’re listening to a video and are getting lost in the terminology for the algorithms, maybe this will help:
The 6 faces of the cube are usually called F (front=the cube surface facing you), B (back=the surface facing away from you), U (up=top surface), D (down=bottom surface), L (left=the surface on the left side of the cube) and R (right=surface on the right side of the cube).
If an algorithm says R, you turn the right surface clockwise (from the perspective of someone looking directly at that face). If it says B, you turn the back surface clockwise, but from the perspective of someone looking at the back face, not from your perspective if that makes sense. Same with the D (down) surface…you have to be careful to rotate clockwise from the perspective of looking at that face, so I kind of turn the down surface up towards me for a moment while I rotate and then put it back facing down to make sure I rotate it in the correct direction.
If instead of a plain letter like R, the notation says R’ with an apostrophe after it, you rotate the right face counter clockwise instead of clockwise. Sometimes people in videos will call this ‘Right inverted’ or something along those lines.
Hope that helps decrypt the notation at least!

I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for the primmer.

No worries. If you don’t find anything, or if you have a source that is mostly good but some particular step is unclear, let me know. I haven’t solved cubes in a while, but my spouse is excellent at them, we may be able to help or make a video or something.

I have the same cube and I know how to solve it. If you have a discord I can teach you via audio chat. Feel free to DM me for my info if you want to.

Thanks for the offer. I'll try the text resources, but will keep you in mind.

*Fakespot analyzes the reviews authenticity and not the product quality using AI. We look for real reviews that mention product issues such as counterfeits, defects, and bad return policies that fake reviews try to hide from consumers.*

*We give an A-F letter for trustworthiness of reviews. A = very trustworthy reviews, F = highly untrustworthy reviews. We also provide seller ratings to warn you if the seller can be trusted or not.*
