*RANT* how to deal with the people who have you play the guessing game like you memorize every acquaintance voice.(self.Blind)
submitted by Trick-Regret-493
Have you delt with people you know and you only see occasionally in public. Where they're like"OHHH COME ON!!! you don't remember me??!" when in all reality you do once they say their name, but sorry no Karen I don't remember your voice from last year's church picnic or other insignificant event you named a year prior. Like how should I handle that type of encounter?

This is the 2nd, seldom acknowledged, use for the white cane.

I always have my cane...rip.

I don't play that game. "No, I don't recognize you/your voice, where do I know you from?"

That is a great response. Thank you.

This is what I do, too. No judgement or emotional reaction, just a polite honest response.

Ridiculously ableist for them to do that. Sighted people aren't expected to play that game and it's perfectly normal for us to see someone and vaguely recognize them but not remember their name or where we met them. It's so normal that people make memes about it.

As a (currently) sighted person with a very poor memory, plenty of people still make me play. It drives me crazy.

That's shitty.

That happened to me once. One of my professors from school came up to me in a parking lot and was like, do you remember me? I was like, uh...who are you? Then they were like, guess. It took me a minute but I figured it out. So awkward.

Yes I just get so uncomfortable as is in I really don't appreciate people asked me to guess the m by voice. 9 x out of time I do remember them just not their voice.. I try to roll with the th0.

Depending on your personality, you could say you don't remember people by their voice, but hitting them with your white cane might be helpful to help you remember

Sometimes I'll just say "Dad???” to get a chuckle. But it keeps happening and not sure how to deal.

That's a great response

Same as anyone, this is not just a blind person thing, though it certainly is easier if you can see. Anyway, don't sweat it. Shake your head ruefully, apologise, and say "Sorry. Was it at that picnic last year?" It doesn't matter what you say or even if the event you're referring to exists. It gives them the hint you have no clue who they are...

I don't really have any problems about it since I have a (almost) good memory of a computer and a strong ear of a music producer
