What is some softwhere or programs that I can use to make/produce beats that works well with JAWS (self.Blind)
submitted by grinchnight14
I wanna try my hand at making like hip hop beats. What's something I can use. Nothing that costs anything, I'm broke as hell. I use JAWS only. Thanks.

Have you tried virtual DJ? It does have screen reader functionality enabled. I just installed this last week on my PC and slowly I’ve been playing with it. Here is the link to the website to get virtual DJ.

And here is a walk-through video of virtual DJ with screen readers support.

If you have an iOS-based device you might want to check out launch pad and groove pad. They are from a company called amplify. I’ve attached the link below
https://ampifymusic.com/products/
Both launchpad and groove pad are accessible on iOS devices with voiceover.
Hope some of this helps you in someway
Stay safe

Your best (and probably only) bet on Windows is Reaper. I've used it with NVDA to record and monitor my voice for some voice-acting work. You have to install Osara and SWS which enable accessibility and add script extensions. There's a website with some very helpful tutorials that should help you get off the ground. Reaper isn't free, but it costs $60US which is very cheap for a full-fledged DAW, and there's a 2-month trial period. Keep in mind, there are basically no instruments included with Reaper, so you'll have to bring your own sounds, and VSTs (basically virtual instruments) tend to not be particularly accessible. I use a mixer with a USB interface to plug in all my synths, but any recording device that's compatible with your computer will do in a pinch.

If you can get access to something running iOS or Mac OS, you can try Garageband for free, and that has a ton of built-in instruments.

I tried that already, and it just flat out wasn't working with my laptop, like I couldn't figure out what to do. It seems like I gotta be somewhat tech savvy, which I'm really not. I wish I could use something like FL Studio or something but one that worked with JAWS.

I've installed and gotten it working on multiple computers. Perhaps try NVDA? The website I included in my post will help with getting it installed and set up.

And yes, you do need tech skills to run a DAW, and you would even with sight. They're very complex programs with a lot of specialized tools and interfaces: recording, audio source selection, stereo pan, MIDI sequencing, filters, fx, configuration for external control hardware, etc. That's not even delving into stuff like ASIO which is a hardware-based audio management solution for improved latency and configuring audio sample rate and bit depth and all the other ancillary bits that go into music production.

I've tried NVDA, and I just simpley don't like how it does things. Like I find it's good for being a free screen reader, but I feel like when I already have JAWS, one I've been using for like a decade already, I'll just use that.

See I thought it'd be like this, like the producer here is just talking like "add the high hat", "add the kicks to make it sound harder" and shit like that. I thought I'd just be able to open a program up and just have everything right there and the actual challenge would be making a beat that actually sounds good. I just wanted to fuck around a bit and practice until I came out with something I was happy with.

Reaper maybe? This isn't something I know much about. If you use Reaper, look into the accessibility extension called OSARA.

I tried that once, and for some reason it just wasn't working with my laptop. Like it kept saying I couldn't do things and I was having a huge amount of trouble getting around it.
