What do people prefer to use to find their way around new environments? (self.Blind)
submitted by MrAxx
I design signage for cities and public buildings and would like to understand what type of information and what format visually impaired users require.
In particular, we have produced Braille signage in the past but I would like to know if this is actually of much benefit and if it is, what content is required.

How about a tactile map of the main streets? With a 3D printer, should be simple.

YESSS!! Go to a mall, told to look at the map. Go to map and it’s just a flat picture. “Ooo… ahh!” Then see if I can stumble upon a janitor.

In the UK there are tactile maps at a few railway stations, they do seem useful.
Unfortunately, a lot of the clients offer fairly small budgets for accessibility and are really just trying to tick boxes hence the norm being Braille signage. They never seem a great option as theres a limit to the information you can provide and people have to be able to read Braille but that’s without knowing what it’s actually like to use them.

I read Braille but don’t want to walk around molesting the walls looking for a little sign. I wish more places would adopt indoor beacon navigation
