Ask me anything about mobile music production for the blind(self.Blind)
submitted by arsen_gevorgyan
Hey yall. I'm a completely blind hip-hop beatmaker who's broke as hell and still makes beats on an iPad. Here is a google drive folder of some of my beats that you can check out.
So, ask me anything about making music on a mobile device as a visually impaired. Will be happy to answer to all your questions.

Hi. I am an amateur Synth musician, and I’ve been looking for good software with virtual instruments. I’ve been playing with garage band on my iPhone, and that seems to have some promise.
What software do you use, and do you know any good tutorials for it?

I use Garageband as well. You can check out these youtube channels for garageband tutorials.
Pete Johns (Studio Live Today) (Tutorials for iOS)

The Garageband Guide (has tutorials mostly for mac but iOS as well)

P.S. I don't use the stock instruments that much

Thanks for the info. I am blind and finding good tutorials for garageband has been a challenge, so I will give those a try. Also, why don’t you use the built-in sounds? I know the acoustic packs aren’t that amazing, but I’ve had good luck with the synthesizers and drum kits

Well,, the type of music that I make is modern hip-hop, specifically trap, drill, and west coast. And so since garageband's trap drum sounds are pretty terible and not very hardhitting, I get all my drums from the internet. For melodic instruments, I use the stock garageband stuff pretty rarely cause most of them are kind of low quality and you can't "fully" tweak and customise them. Instead I use one shot kits. A one shot is a wav recording of an instrument playing a single note (usually C) that you can import to the sampler of your daw and use them like a virtual instrument.

That makes sense. I’m not a fan of the acoustic stuff either. The synthesizer stuff though, oof. Some of them hit hard. I just discovered that my mixer works natively with my iPhone, and I’m looking forward to checking out the accessibility improvements to GarageBand in iOS 15. I think I’m going to have some fun. Thanks for the tutorials

For those looking for accessible music making and audio editing software, I highly recommend Reaper. It's fully accessible once you install the OSARA extension and works really well. the extension is only available on windows for the moment. Reaper only costs 60$ but they have a very generous free trial period that doesn't remove any features and you can basically continue evaluating indefinitely.

Reapers without peepers is a great email group and resource to get started with Reaper specifically for screen reader users.

Cool to see other blind be makers in high school right now I’m taking digital music as a class and we’re working on max and using a few different programs like garage band reason and soundtrap.com I know there’s also logic and I believe QBase as well but we haven’t touched those ones yet don’t really use the computer myself because I don’t know voiceover on Mac that well yet but basically the way I do it is my aid is on the computer clicking the different Instruments tempo quantizing and all that jazz and I am on a midi keyboard playing the sounds in
