Nervous about the future (self.Blind)
submitted by januaryinferno
Hi. My name is tori and I’m 26. I am visually impaired- always partially blind, but I’ve gone fully blind multiple times and it is likely to happen again. I have found myself panicking and spiraling a bit in the past few weeks about my future and was wondering if anyone else can relate. I currently live at home with my parents and I’m not able to live on my own. I don’t currently have a job due to my disability and I am applying for disability benefits this week (hopefully I get approved). I’ve just been having a lot of anxiety about my living situation in the future and what it would look like. I don’t want to be a burden on others, but I also don’t want to be 40 living with my parents. I’m afraid that I will end up just kind of being passed around from people who take me in for a bit. All of these situations in my head are hypothetical and I know that I need to snap myself out of spiraling, but I can’t shake it right now. I have no idea what I’m going to do. Have you guys felt this fear before? If so, what did you do about it/ what situation did you find that was a good fit for you?

I don't really know how to help other than letting you know you are not alone. I lost my vision less than a year ago and it is not coming back I'm turning 30 next month and I just don't know what will happen so I don't know how to make you feel better but just know that you are not alone. Some things that have helped me are applying for benefits and talking about it with other people. Sorry you are feeling this way.

I understand you dont want to be passed around, and trust me you wont. But for that not to happen you need to take control of your life. With or without vision.

Your life will not be the same as many others, but it will be like some others. You are not alone, but you will have the feeling that you are. When you get an income, you must start saving up money to move into an appartment, you must get out, meet others and always remember to listen.

I’m not seeing impaired but I do experience anxiety. There is a podcast called The Panic Pod, where a psychotherapist who specializes in anxiety talks about a different aspect of anxiety each episode. Once I better understood why and how anxious thought spirals happen, my own anxiety decreased and I have basically been anxiety free for around a year. On top of that, the host has a calming voice that calms me down. Maybe the podcast could help you too?

The host of the podcast has also written two books about anxiety, and they may be in audio format. His name is Joshua Fletcher.

There are blind people living meaningful, productive lives with families of their own and well-paying jobs in all manner of industries. The first step is getting adjustment-to-blindness training.

I think the first thing you should do is find a good therapist to help you manage your anxiety, accept your disability and find out your strengths. I know a lot of people including myself who could channel their abilities into finding a job they can do, even with the limitations disability brings. I was very scared myself but once I got over the anxiety, things became a lot easier.

Wishing you luck with your disability claim, I am going through that right now. Legally blind in my left eye (though I have some vision) and visually impaired in my right, all from a brain n tumor. Mine won't change, it's optic nerve atrophy, but I can't drive and there's no public transportation where I am and walking to and from work is no longer safe for me. Nor can I do it in the winter. I don't know what they'll do with the claim, but it is what it is. Wishing you luck and strength ❤
