Cane wrap? (self.Blind)
submitted by Pinknose27
I’m looking for a place that will “wrap” my daughter’s cane. Something cool like cats in space 🚀😻

I know Ambutech let’s you order canes in different colours. I haven’t ordered one myself, or chosen to decorate my own cane. The reason for this is that one of my cane’s functions is to identify me as blind. It lets drivers know I might not see them when I’m crossing the road, and passers-by that I might not see them well enough to get out of their way.

For example my cane broke once as I was passing through a busy train station. I knew my way around, and have enough vision could have navigated it without the cane except that people kept bumping in to me. I couldn’t quite see them well enough to get out of the way in time. I feel like I would have the same problem with a cane that wasn’t that distinctive reflective white.

I think there are things you could do to decorate a cane, without ruining the identification piece. For instance, I have a carabiner clipped to the elastic at the top of the handle so I can clip the folded cane to a belt loop, but you could attach a fun key chain there, instead. You could maybe wrap a couple strips of fun tape up near the handle, or where the red and while tape meets, leaving most of the cane it’s original colours. If such a thing exists, white reflective tape with a cool pattern in another light colour (so it still looks whitish from a distance) would be cool. If you’re going to have it a different colour entirely, at least make sure it’s reflective, like the Ambutech coloured canes, for visibility at night.

I have read that in certain states maybe, changing the look of a cane can render it unless incase of any form of claims or insurance, like as in someone couldn't decifer it was a white cane and a blind user and if q trip, traffic issue at a crossing occurs. But then I have also seen lots of people with them decorated.

Came across this young kids blog piece on decorating but she has her own self imposed rules

1. Keep the handle clear so I still have a good grip.
2. I can't go outside at night with my cane covered in dark colors.
3. I have to use my old cane or not damage my good one.
4. Only do to my cane what I know is safe (and fun).

This link seems to list each states rules

I don't mean to be a Debbie downer, I too have considered it for my 9yo, but I might just do one or 2 strips of blue washi tape or something for now

I’d say look for some small stickers to put on the shaft closer to the handle. Still fun, yet doesn’t change the color of the cane and I know they make textured ones she could enjoy in multiple ways.

Yes, I was about to warn about this. Where I live, my O&M Instructors have always warned that covering the white body of the cane renders any protection via the White Cane Laws void. I have a Hi-Lite so just my grip and tip are colored.

You are all right! Thanks for the info. I’m surprised I didn’t find this info myself. We’re going to stick with the boring white cane. 😂😂

Don't think of it as boring. Think of it as a recognisable, meaningful icon.

You can still customize it, but you want the primary color to be white, for recognizability.

My cane has a purple bottom section, then a band of galaxy print washi tape just below the grip and a small rocket ship charm on the cord.

A charm! What a nice touch!

Some fun stickers on the shaft are still feasible though! Just don't cover it!

Have you tried washi tape? Some designs are so adorable using is as accent parts would make the cane unique, some washi tapes are semi transparent.

I bring on to cane handle plushie material because gum or other one causes painful blisters it's always colorful. No problem with insurance just because my cane looks bit different (with way different handle material and colors, shiny stones and jewelry key charms yes I'm adult but often somebody else was taking my cane so i had to make it as different as possible) , was often taken by ambulance found on the street or sidewalk because of my other medical condition. As long proper technique is used while walking with cane insurance is valid at least in Europe that's most important or having the yellow armband with 3 black dots - symbol of severe visual problems visible.

This looks interesting special designed removable decorative tape for medical aids $1 they claim it can be reapplied and desinfected leaves no glue

I used to wrap the handle of my kid's cane with tennis racket grip like

$1

It's not hard to do on your own!

There's another comment saying it can be "useless" in insurance, etc, but I presume you know that and are using this for a "fun"/indoor cane/for a small child who's not going out on their own yet, but you could totally wrap the cane in contact paper. Glossy/reflective would probably be better for visibility.

I'm not sure about warps for the main shaft of the cane, but you can get fun covers for the handles!
