How can I make friends who also have trouble with their vision? (self.Blind)
submitted by Trick-Regret-493
I'm looking for a place to talk socially with other people who can relate to things I'm facing both the stressful funny. I'm not on social media anymore.
I have discord.

About me. I'm turning 30 next month (yikes) I'm from NY.I enjoy cooking, gaming, my pets. I'm new to vision loss I had a stroke from a heart valve problem. I am really finny (according to me) . I'm easy to talk to and laid back. I put my clothes on backwards attest on Tuesday and Friday until my fam let's me know my shirt is on wrong. Still getting used to my new blind life.

Edit: I wasn't expecting people to respond. Anyone who wants to be frandds pm me I'll literally talk to anyone about anything lol

Hey op,

I'm 34 and lost my vision two years ago. I can't really game much anymore save for something like minecraft on a really big screen. I'm still adjusting to vision loss myself, but it's slowly getting easier as time goes on.

I'm on discord most of the time. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk strategy or life or whatever.

Hey op!
My name is Ellie, I’ve been VI my whole life, but have only been really using my accommodations for the last four years. I hope you know that whatever you feel right now is completely valid.
Since you live in New York I would try establishing yourself with blind and low vision organizations such as lighthouse for the blind. There is one in California here where I live, and they offer so many programs like cooking, life skills, bingo, and virtual game night. Just being able to sit there and talk with other blind and visually impaired friends really helps whatever I go through. I like to say that it recharges my social batteries from the training social norms that our canes seem to be the Spohn of Satan.
If there are any retreats possible such as a new vision loss retreat, nature retreat, or life skills program, I highly recommend that you join any of those to help you establish a connection to other blind folk. This can also help you build your orientation and mobility skills on different surfaces and at different paces. In middle school I went to Enchanted Hills Camp for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Napa, California, and I really learned about the blind community and was inspired by the mainly blind and visually impaired counseling staff. Watching the staff teach blind youth how to do you every day tasks that sighted people take for granted was eye-opening. I am now a counselor there, and cannot say enough about how great it is to watch campers grow in their cane skills. For me it took going to camp with other blind kids to learn that it was okay to be blind.
I have a discord server of a couple of us counselors from there if you would like to join us. Feel free to reach out to me about anything vision related. Please keep us updated on your journey! Remember that you are valid, loved, and worthy!

Peace and love ❤️

Hi! I might not understand fully, but as someone with a 100% blind dad, 2 uncles and an aunt I do understand some, and would like to understand more. My dad was able to kind of see me when I was born (42 years ago) and he couldn’t see my sister. I am so proud and impressed with him every day

Lighthouse Guild has remote sessions in which you might be able to meet people. You could also call and see if they have any suggestions.

Hey there! Welcome to the fam! You seem really chill! I’m like ten years younger than you and still have some usable sight, but feel free to ask me anything if you ever have questions. I’ve been doing the blind thing my whole life lol
Trick-Regret-493 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
You're probably good at it now! Im still learning.
K-R-Rose 3 points 1y ago
Lmao I’m definitely not 😂 I refused to acknowledge it in social situations until I was like 16, so I guess I’m good on my own, but still figuring it out in other ways

There are multiple very active Facebook groups that I recommend you join that are dedicated to blind and visually impaired individuals. This one is a good example https://www.facebook.com/groups/259008737631118/?ref=share
