Marking remote buttons (self.Blind)
submitted by Theaterismylyfe
This is kind of a disability crossover episode question. I'm not blind, but I am Deaf. I recently got a fidget cube. For those who don't know, it is a little toy with different things to play with on each side to keep your hands occupied. I know a few of them make noise and to avoid them in class. But it comes with 5 buttons, some make noise and some don't. There is no way to tell just by looking at them, and I don't want to be making noise in class. How do you mark buttons on a TV remote to know what they do? I'm sorry if this is a frequent question, it just seemed like something everyone would do differently.

Buttons on a remote are usually marked with something called a bump dot (https://lighthouse-sf.org/2017/07/26/better-living-through-stickers-7-ways-to-use-bump-dots-in-daily-life/), although you can also use velcro and other materials.

Not all the buttons are marked, usually the more important ones (on/off, volume up/down, and the 5).

Since you are sighted, I would recommend permanent marker. Otherwise, $1 or something similar might work

You could have someone put a bump dot on the parts that make noise so you’ll know which ones to avoid. That’s what I use for remotes, buttons on microwave, etc.

Personally, I use $1. I'd also consider using a knife to cut tiny notches, depending on the item.

For you though… why not just use a Sharpie? Easy enough to visually mark the bits that make noise.
