Are there magnifying nail clippers or something? I need help seeing what I'm doing when I clip my toes. (self.Blind)
submitted by Bsmith0799
I can't bend my foot up close enough and I can't see far enough down. My vision is just super blurry, things need to be either super magnified or super close to my face for me to see well.

I have the same issue, I try to go by feel but still end up cutting myself accidentally. So far I’ve gotten “get a mail file”, “go to the salon”, and “get a podiatrist” none of which work for me

I have ptsd pretty bad; I don't really let people touch me.

I deny the "pushing on my stomach" part of a physical. I do okay with the blood pressure cuff, and listening to my heart, but that even took a while to build that trust with my dr.

All of my friends know I don't do hugs or anything.

I don't get my hair cut, its halfway down my back.

I don't ever have someone guide me by my arm, instead they can take my service dog's longer leash and walk ahead and I give shay the "follow behind" command and I hold his traffic leash. He isn't a guide dog, he's a PTSD and migraine dog. I can see walls and people well enough to not run into them, but because I can't make out features well its hard to make out specific things to know which person I'm supposed to follow in settings where I'm following them, if that explanation makes sense. That's his only command related to vision and we rarely need it, it only really matters in a situation like a new drs office or something. We live in a small rural town so I'm familiar with most places in it already. I get around okay without a cane. In fact, my main form of transportation is biking, my only big issue is depth perception with it. I had to learn to look ahead for the colored patches that designate the slopes on the sidewalk. But for small details like street signs, I don't see those. I had to memorize my used routes and use verbal GPS.

So for small details like nails I run into the same issue. I just can't make it out. I can tell my foot is there but not the small details.

But a salon or something like that isn't an option for me honestly due to the touch thing.

Yeah that’s really tough, for me the salon is a financial trouble as well as my toenails growing a certain way not bad enough for a podiatrist but not normal enough for others to understand nor for Emory boards to be efficient replacements for clippers.

Yeah. I'm just glad I figured out a solution to the problem with someone needing to take me by the arm 😅. It felt unavoidable for a while

Yeah that’s tough, I don’t like being touched either but if it helps sighted guide is supposed to be the visually impaired person taking the guide by the arm not the blind person being grabbed by someone else.

Do you have no podiatrists local or is it expensive?

I'm lucky in the UK I can get it on the NHS. I'd be screwed otherwise.

My insurance covers it but last time I went the doctor chastised me saying how he sees people much worse than me and why do I think I need to be there because my feet don’t look that bad. I just haven’t had the nerve to find someone else because I’m still upset about that encounter and I don’t want to have to go back every three weeks for a toenail clipping every time I need one.

There’s desk magnifiers that have bendable or hinged arms to get them in the right place, they use a clamp to attach. You could clip them to a wood chair or footstool and put your foot on the chair/stool. They usually have a light and you can get fairly large ones. They’re quite handy

This is a similar product they straps to the foot

There’s a “made for tv” clipper with a magnifier called “sure clip” https://tvtimedirect.com/products/sure-clip-worlds-most-advanced-toenail-clipper

lol. That is one of the things that annoys me is clipping toes. I have to put my leg in a way that is annoying and still I can't get things at an angle to do it well.

Here's a link for one in Australia. $31 AUD

Another Australian link. $25 AUD

Would that ship to the US?
letspaintthesky 1 points 1y ago
I'll see if I can find out.

Edit: I'm sorry, no such luck :(

Edit 2: Maxi Aid, a US based website, has them way cheaper!

I 100% have this problem..and I use surgical loupes for it. They're like tiny telescopes that surgeons sometimes wear to see small structures when they operate. I have the expensive kind because I need them to perform actual surgery, but there are some pretty cheap ones like these that amazon is apparently selling for 40 bucks

I just started getting pedicures without getting my toenails painted. I love it!
