First White Cane (self.Blind)
submitted by Mamamagpie
I have had Right Homonymous hemianopsia for 36 years. I have used prisms on my glasses to help, which is imperfect. After my most recent tripping and sparing my ankle and started to think, is it because I’m clumsy or is my vision. Realized it happens more on blind side then my sighted side.

So got my free cane from NFB.

Has anyone replaced the tip with a rolling tip? I think gliding the cane on my blind side with a diagonal technique will work best for me, but original tip it catching in cracks in the pavement.

So in August I rolled my ankle when I stepped on uneven paving. Both the paramedics in the ambulance and the ER doc, said the same thing, “uneven paving in this city?” Every word was dripping with so much sarcasm I could have drowned.

I think I trip more in our crumbling cities than on rugged trails.

We changed to a large roller ball instead of the std roller as we live in a rural area and roads and paths are terrible, even in the nearby towns

I don't think it's possible to change the tip on the free ones? If it is, I'd love to know how.

I haven’t tried to replace the tip of the NFB cane but for me it slides well on waxed floors but works best with two point touch, if you find yourself tripping less with it then I recommend ordering a Revolution brand mobility cane or similar depending on what’s available to you so that you can choose your preferred tip and change it as you need to.

Also it might be fun to see if I could 3D print an adapter for the Omni Sense tip for the NFB cane.

Yeah that would be really cool

That’s cool, I have no idea how all that works haha

I think I will eventually do that. I want make sure I get the right length. The one I have is close, but I’m walking slower with it than I know I can, so once I have more confidence and speed I will see what length I need.

Most people like ones that are close to their shoulder height, my cane is 54 inches and when standing next to me the top of it is just above my shoulder. If you’ve got a friend or someone who can measure you that might be helpful for trying something out.
