Phone for Blind - Gift (self.Blind)
submitted by jone7007
I would like to buy a new cell phone as a gift for my grandmother whose eyesight has significantly worsened recently. Before she could use a flip phone but is really struggling to use it now. I'm concerned for her safety wise because I'm not sure that she is always able call for help it were needed.

I'm hoping that you all have a few recommendations as what models are good. Particularly for a newly blind person.

I have had good luck with some of these:
https://www.snapfon.com/ez4G/

They are large, very basic phones for seniors. No flashy features. No touchscreen or podcasts or flimdoodlers or facepages. They have tactile (clicky) oversized keys, a bright display, the keys read the number back to you as you dial, and the plans don't eat you alive. It is specifically designed for seniors and could easily be used without sight.

An iPhone can do a LOT for someone who is blind - but it is expensive and you need weeks of training to be good at it.

the iphone has been like THE phone for the visually impaired. Android has pretty much caught up, but iphone is still a little more user friendly, imo. Get to know voiceover so you can teach her!

I think the other commenters missed the parts about "Grandma", and "newly blind". Unless your grandma is not like my grandma (a very real possibility I admit), then getting her an IPhone is not a reasonable option.

Instead, you probably want to get her one of these:

Thank you. This is very helpful. She couldn't even figure out how to use the display on her flip phone when she could see it. I don't think that she could handle learning how to use a smartphone at the same time as leaning how to use a phone without being able to see.

It's not a phone but you might want to look into the alexa devices or gogle homes.

They both have drop in options from what I understand.
