How to get a cane? (self.Blind)
submitted by spekulatis
I have a friend that is diabetic and he is going blind, how or where can he get a cane? He is going to a local centre for the blind in his city.

If he can't get a cane from the local center for the blind, he should run, not walk, to a center that knows what they're doing. Though to be fair, he should run carefully, since he doesn't have a cane.

It probably depends on where he is living (country/state). The local rehabilitation facility for the blind could probably provide it.

If your friend is in the US, he could also get one through NFB.

Just my personal thoughts here. Nfb canes or commandertech varriants are the lightest canes and have the best texture feedback. I used to hate streight canes, but after I started using one all of the time I noticed less strain on my arm and wrist, if your using a cane for long periods constantly this is most important. Also get a cane, that comes up to the bottom of your chin, depending if you are a fast walker, some people like up to the end of there nose. The standard way of cane measurements, by the AER is up to your breastbone or in the center of your chest. Using this method you will have to stretch your arm out to detect dropoffs when walking in step, this causes strain on the arm. Using the chin or at the nose method allows you to detect dropoffs and other annoyances while keeping your cane hand at the center of your body.

@KillerLag is right. If there is a center for the blind in his area, they should be the first call, otherwise HHS which would suck

It amazes me that I can't write all the assisting tech for the blind. Gets expensive.

To get the cane you just buy one. You'll need to figure out what kind you're going to get. If you get a symbol cane just so people know you have a sight issue, fine. If you want to get a long cane and navigate with it, that's something you need to learn how to do. Find someone who knows how and prepare for a bit of a process, but it's so worth it.
