Suggestions for E-readers for software engineers? (And e-readers in general)? (self.Blind)
submitted by iwokeuplike
Hi all, my bf is a blind software engineer.

He uses E-readers primarily for non-work. His current one doesn't have a speed up function which he would like. He would also like an option to skim read (idk if that's an option yet?)

He doesn't use E-readers for work because he has struggled with the way they read code. For example they pronounce code incorrectly when they don't know what word it should be. Another problem is not reading out punctuation which is necessary to understanding the code.

Do you have any recommendations for him to try out?

I forgot to mention, I think he uses Talk-back currently.

TalkBack is a screen reader for Android. I don't use Android, but I have friends who do, and I know from listening to the speech output emanating from their phones that TalkBack can speak very quickly.

Screen readers for both Windows and macOS allow you to configure the amount of punctuation that's spoken. JAWS and NVDA, the most popular screen readers for Windows, also allow you to customize the name given to each symbol. For example, many blind programmers who rely on speech output change "left brace" to "lace". These screen readers also have methods for announcing the amount of indentation of each line.
