Shopping for a new phone (self.Blind)
submitted by Altie-McAltface
I'd like to know what phone everyone uses. I'm sure most will say iPhone. I was an iPhone user for many years, but my needs have shifted and much of what I need/want to use isn't on iOS. I've been using a Pixel 3A XL for the past two years, but it's time to upgrade, and I'd like to know what's out there.

Unfortunately, iOS is still more accessible. Talkback has been inching its way towards being fit for use, but it's still missing many things that VoiceOver has had from the beginning, like split tapping and announcing updates of the contents under the cursor. I do like Android's screen magnifier better though.

So what are your thoughts?

you seem to have a handle on things already. iPhone is still popular for more speech and Braille users than Android-based devices. you've not given us much to go on as to what you yourself want/need; your post basically tells us things you know without going into what you want.

OK I guess I didn't phrase it well. I want to know: 1) What phones other blind people are using and 2) for those using Android, especially newer phones, how do they rate the accessibility?

I use a lot of IT-related apps. For example, iOS prevents apps from accessing the MAC address of incoming packets, so things like network sniffers won't work. On the other hand, I read a lot of stuff from the web, and Talkback is notoriously slow. If I scroll down a page, it may take several seconds before Talkback is able to read again, and continuous reading is pretty terrible vs VoiceOver.

I had an iPad up until a few weeks ago when I let the battery run out, so now I can't find it. Anyway, I'm familiar with iOS's accessibility developments. I used the magnifier on the iPad all the time.

There is the Pixel 5a if you can buy it in your country. Or Samsung Galaxy A series phones are good value for the money (A52, A72). Sony Xperia 10 III another option. I wouldn't buy from a Chinese manufacturer, their software updates are usually questionable.

They recently updated the magnifier on iPhone. You may want to walk into a store and just play with things to be honest. Android is really starting to catch up on some regards especially since the Braille note touch is using some android software
