Help. Medical condition giving me bouts of blindness. How do I deal with the symptoms? (self.Blind)
submitted by Reasonable-Author-63
I (21F) have been dealing with my eyes spasming/crossing for a few years now. It started with them crossing and I would get double vision and it has continually gotten worse to where this last week I have been dealing with bouts of blindness. I am in college for mechanical engineering, and last week I had classes I missed just because I couldn't safely walk to class. When it happens when I am doing schoolwork on my computer I find my work at a stand still, I haven't been able to figure out how to use Narrator (I use Windows) so that I can navigate around my computer.

From my doctors, I basically just have to deal with my symptoms because I am not dying and there's nothing they can do.

I contacted the Council for the blind and visually impaired for the area and I am working with the disabilities coordinators on campus. I am considering trying to reduce my course load and pushing back my graduation.

I am reaching out for help with how to be able to function without my sight. I feel like I am losing it because it could be gone at any moment and I can't control it. I feel like someone who has been through something similar validating my fears could be helpful, I feel absolutely terrified and out of control. Thanks for any help.

Get a full exam, eyes, ears, nose/throat, and brain soon. You’re describing nystagmus (jumpy vision) and strabismus (eyes crossing or misaligning) and unless your family has a history it can be caused by many things including medication, and stress. Could be as simple as a med change or glasses.

I have had everything checked, seen specialists, I have a diagnosis of estropia and spasm of accommodation. I have tried meds and changing my glasses prescription. So far, it is still getting worse.

Right now, I am just trying to live my life dealing with my symptoms because my doctors tell me there is nothing they can do for me.

So intermittent Esttopia? Has your Optometrist prescribed prisms yet? Also does reduction of stress reduce symptoms? You mentione’d a heavy course load, is this a newer, more intense semester, and could it be stress related? The body does weird things.

Prisms and surgery won't work for me.

Stress heavily affects my symptoms, I am trying to reduce stress. This semester is stressful, and I am considering what I can do to make it less so, but I need to be able to deal with stressful things too.

Figuring out how I can handle my symptoms will help significantly.

Tell your dean or professors now, so that they understand and accommodate you. For me, the hardest thing is being slower at everything. Tell them you are trying to deal with this as best you can.

I would see more experts and seek alternatives. Focus on your health and lower stress first.

Reading the web on this one.
This is a rare condition, there are other medications and addressing the neuro component is essential.
