Are there accessibility features with the Apple Pencil? (self.Blind)
submitted by kelpangler
I think it’s mostly a drawing tool which the majority here might not benefit from. There’s a feature called Scribble which converts handwriting into text but it doesn’t seem to work with VoiceOver as far as I can tell. Anyone have experience with the Apple Pencil?

No accessibility features yet

I mean, it is basically a pencil. It does the same thing as a regular pencil can do, except for it writes digitally on an iPad. Basically, think of the same things you can do with a regular pencil on paper. If you really think about it, there is not much accessibility options available because it is just a writing tool.

Its accessibility is bundled with general accessibility gains from using digital devices. For instance, many blind people have difficulty with contrast. So they may not be able to read black text on white, but can read white text on black easily. If you take notes on an iPad, you can just invert colors so that you are writing white text on a black page.

I find it very useful for writing out math problems. I essentially can't read any handwriting on white pages anymore.

And as a sidenote to OP: the "majority" of blind people fall into the "low-vision" camp, not the 100% blind camp. High contrast, text enlargement, etc are all ways digital technology has massively improved the quality of life for the blind.

It is quite literally a $130 finger made by Apple. The only extra added functionality you would get with an Apple Pencil as opposed to using your fleshy finger is pressure sensitivity and tilt registration when drawing or sketching. Other than that, it does the exact same Bing you’re meat tentacles can do.

That does not mean I am trying to stop anyone from getting one, I just want to make sure people understand that it does nothing special unless you are extremely into drawing and like pressure sensitivity. Other than that, you have 10 Apple pencils on the end of your hands!

I understand what you're saying and I feel like it's an old simplification. After playing around with my Apple Pencil more here's what l like about it.

- In terms of just straight up writing and drawing it's much more accurate for me which is really helpful. There are things like not having to use multiple pages for m to go up in something that can be reduced down to a single page. Sketching around text seems easier too.

- Scribble is pretty impressive. I can start writing in any text I come across. I don't have to worry about squinting to find the right keys.

- Starting a note straight from a locked screen is super convent. I don't have to do Face ID and then open the notes app to start my note. I just tap on the screen.

- Taking a screenshot is also really convenient. Just swipe your pencil from the bottom left of the screen to take a screenshot. Then you can get going in markup mode easily.

Just a few things I'm discovering!

I appreciate the reminder on who makes up the blind community. I've still got functional vision myself. Thanks!
