Simple question (self.Blind)
submitted by Turnontuneindropout8
How often do most blind people fall? And do some of y’all choose to not use a cane?
OldManOnFire 5 points 1y ago
Been blind for a few months now. I haven't fallen yet but I walk slower than I used to so I won't fall if I trip over something I can't see.

I rarely use a cane. When I do it's 99% so people will stay out of my way and 1% so I don't run into things. I usually hold my wife's hand when I walk. I don't go very many places by myself since I can't drive anymore.

I’m legally blind and still have usable sight, so I have never fallen, but I trip on stuff sometimes. Just today I tripped over my roommate’s ukulele case because it was the same color as the carpet. Stuff like that happens lol. And no I don’t use a cane because I can get myself around with the sight I have

I don’t fall often or at all really. I’ve been blind for 3-4 years now. I use a cane when I’m off of my property. I use echolocation too. If my house has a lot of people over or if the people I live with are rearranging or doing something that’s making a mess I’ll use my cane inside.

I'm legally blind 17 years I've fallen 3 times from stairs because somebody pushed ne or grabbed my cane, i slipped down few stairs because i miscounted them while running down few times but never twisted or broke any part of my body. I climbed trees without accuracy like lines or ladder (I'm actually more scared of using ladder than climbing trees), wall/rocks and mountain climbing few times with and without cane using feet to feel terrain and others help. Did fallen off horse once.

At first i refused to use white cane and O&M because i thought "only fully blind use those I'm not needing this" i lost rapidly light in left eye and 85% of cushion
in the right but refered to myself as one sided extremely high multiple visual vision complicated problems LOL but i had status of legal blindness till i started having strained muscle pain from unnatural positions i did while walking to try to detect anything visually and when few times i was almost hit by car on one walk to school i decided to give white cane a try. But i used it at first for many years only when I needed if not needed i just folded it back.

I learned safe fast reacting to losing balance while ice skating/roller skating

I don’t think I fall more than anyone else, though I guess I might be more likely to trip over things in my path from not seeing them on time. But, that’s what my white cane is for. I use my cane whenever I’m in unfamiliar surroundings.

I’d say I don’t think my eye condition gives me balance issues or anything like that, that would make someone more prone to falling.

Oh, I also bang my shins more often, because I don’t have great depth perception, and misjudge how far away things are. I took a pottery class in college, and could not seem to walk through the pottery studio without banging into one or more stools because they were at just the wrong height for my eyes to make sense of how far away they were.

I never fall. I also only use my cane when I'm commuting to work

I don't think I've once ever fallen due to smacking into stuff. I have had massive bruises on my hips from finding counter edges where they overhang a lot from whatever they're sitting on, then the cane can go way underneath and you miss it. But that's really rare.

You can pry my cane from my cold dead hands.

Mostly if if you have sight problems, if you're new to it you'll be really careful and if you're experienced then you're experienced at not falling on your ass. So it doesn't really happen much.

After 36 years of being VI, I came to the conclusion that I trip on things or step on things that cause my ankle to roll more often on my blind side. So I got my first can this month. Should have done it decades ago.

I don't use a cane unless it's dark out, or I'm going to unfamiliar places - been using it off and on for about 5 years now, 43yrs old, legally blind since birth.

The last time I fell because of my vision loss was one such instance where we went some place new at night and I didn't have my cane.

Without the cane, I'd miss a step or twist an ankle maybe once or twice a year, in recent years. When I was younger, it was less frequent than that. I have yet to fall while actually using the cane.

I seldom used a cane until a while back when I missed some steps and fell in front of several people. I wasn't seriously injured, but it frightened my wife and was much more embarrassing than using a cane would have been. After that I promised to use the cane all the time and I have to admit it's been a relief.
