Emotions are strange things aren't they?

Perhaps you've been going through things that aren't even related to this thing but hearing a word brings up memories.

I can listen to a peace of music or something and feel fine and the next day I could start crying like crazy, I think it's to do with how willling we are to delve into our feelings. Are we willing to show them that day or hide them away if we can.

You're feelings are valid as they're *your feelings.*

What the fuck is this thread.

Why does that make you feel excluded? it says "If you can see her you can be her". However, that doesn't mean that you can't be her.
Amonwilde -1 points 1y ago
It's an inspiring message that leaves out the OP. It's excluding her from the inspiring message, since she can't see her. Why wouldn't she feel excluded?
magouslioni690 2 points 1y ago
But that still means she can be her because they didn't say "you can only be her if you can see her."
Amonwilde 1 points 1y ago
Sure, but so what? It means the message doesn't apply to her, hence she's left out of whatever inspiration it's supposed to invoke.

Since you seem to want to think about this logically (probably not the right frame for this, but whatever), consider it this way.

With or without the message, she can live her life and do whatever she wants.

The message is intended to provide inspiration to young women (or whoever) that they can become something they'd presumably like to become.

The message is written in such a way that, strictly speaking, it doesn't apply to OP, as the OP can't see her.

It's correct that OP can still live her life whatever way she wants as if she hadn't seen the message.

It's also fair to say that OP is excluded from the message. She's heard the message, but it produced an unintended result. Hence it's fair for her to feel excluded. She has in a real sense been excluded from the message.

Here's an analogy. I have plans on Saturday evening to watch my favorite TV show and have a quiet evening. I talk to a friend and hear that someone in my class has invited them to a party. I am not invited to the party myself. I can still do the thing that I intended to do on Saturday, and so in some sense I'm not worse off. But there's also a sense in which I'm worse off because I've been excluded, and now I feel excluded.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Im blind and I just found this thread and I like it and this post confuses me. Doesn't this just mean that you can't be her
Itsthejoker 1 points 1y ago
Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't; that doesn't make OP's feelings any less valid, especially given the exclusionary nature of the ad in question. Please be nice.
ChinchillaSenpai 5 points 1y ago
Oh sorry I just prefer to ask questions directly rather than sugarcoating them so that there is less for one to read but if you know that something is not directed to you, but to another targetmarket, what is there to be upset about? If someone doesn't fall under the category of being able to see her, I'm sure that means that they can't be her and that is ok since everyone in life is not awarded equal oppertunities. Idk if it's the same but isn't this the same as people in wheelchairs complaining when ads say something like 1 step at a time. They know it's not for them so ignore

Yeah, if a tv commercial With a general statement like this or something similar offends you, then you’re in for a whirl when you interact with the rest of the world. God forbid someone tells OP to look on the bright side or mentions looking at something from another perspective. It’s just a saying, not a personal attack.

OP... I am not sure why people are trying to argue with you ... I read your post and you clearly said that even you didn't understand why this commercial bothered you so much. You have valid feelings. And usually in this community (r/blind) others are more understanding of other blind people sometimes feeling like we are excluded. I didn't read that you were offended but just stating and observation.

You do bring up a question I often think about... I wonder if the people making some of the advertisements realize how many more people they could reach if they just made minor tweaks. My least favorite are the commercials that are just music and text, even worse when it is light text on a light background.
