Electric kettle for visually impaired. Handy or nonsense?(self.Blind)
submitted by Or_man
Hello, as a bachelor work I designed electric kettle for visually impaired people. It has features that in my opinion could make life easier for them in similar price pool.
Features are
1. Spout designed to help hold the kettle while leaning against the edge of the mug.
2. Double wall keep kettle body cool so nothing bad happens if you accidently miss the handle.
3. Vertical handle that should help with pouring (better knowledge about position of water in the kettle)
4. Contrast colors.
5. Build in audible water level indicator with 5 levels, each one 0.25L
6. None of the features limit usage for people with sight.
Company which cooperated with me while designing stopped responding, and I’m curious if you think this kettle should exist, and if I should try to contact other companies that could possibly manufacture it.
My second question is: Which product should be done differently to make your life easier?
Sorry if I made too many grammar mistakes.

I don't use one myself, but a friend has one of these, combined with an audible liquid level indicator
How does it work with water level indicator? I thought that indicators are too small for the kettles.
I have looked at kettle you mentioned, but I thought it’s just better for people with arthritis or some musculoskeletal disease than for visually impaired.

She uses the water level indicator in the cup. With the cup/mug placed at the base of the kettle, it's at the right position for pouring.

Ty for clarification. I tought you are speaking about indication of water level in the kettle.

This is pretty neat. Wonder what others will have to say about it. The consideration is definitely appreciated by me, as someone who generally likes to live their life in silence dealing with whatever obstacles pop up. Not to bring up anything negative but, please don't pay any mind to any people that try to claw out your throat because they feel they're too good for your idea... There's a certain word I'm looking for here but I'm drawing a blank. They're just projecting.

This was very nicely said.

This sounds like a good idea. It’s not over the top, but not too little either. Just the right balance of features to make things a little bit easier.

I have the liquid level buzzer. I wanted to keep the kids one that plays "It's a Small World" but it would annoy everyone ...

I really like this idea! If you can find a way for a company to pick it up, go for it.

As someone who struggles pouring hot water, this is a good idea.

Not sure if it’s worth much now, but oh my god yes please. If you add Audible temperature control, then it would be pure gold. It’s probably too Nisha feature, even for this, but you would make at least two blind coffee enthusiasts very happy

I have an electric kettle; and I haven’t had any issues with it. That being said, I(d love it more if it had the spout that hooked the lip of the cup and the audible water indicators. I usually just fill my mug with water and then pour that into the kettle so I know I have the correct amount:

I like this. I use my kettle all the time, but one of the things I dislike about it is how hard it is to see what I'm pouring compared to pouring out of.... basically any other container in existence, because of the way the lid/spout is designed.

I have no opinion, but wanted to point out that self-heating mugs exist and might be safer.

An electric Kettle is a staple in almost every UK household. If someone offerred me a warming mug because I was blind, I'd seriously question why I was friends with them
Dietzgen171 points1y ago
What makes you think everyone here is from the UK? As it happens, I'm an American who has owned a couple of electric kettles over the years, but I really do not understand your affronted tone.
And who's talking about anyone offering you a mug? I was assuming a situation in which one was heating water for oneself. Heating a big kettle might be dangerous.

I was pointing out geographical differnces, really; electric kettles are the standard in British homes where they may not be in other places.
My afronted toen is because I am seeing an increasing number of people being advised to use warming gismos not because they may be more economical or anything, but that there is a dangerous assumption that someone with only blindness as a disability is incapable of managing an electric kettle. It's an attitude which concerns me because I feel it's just another brick in the wall of adaptations made for us which harm our perceived abilities to conform with societal norms. I work with visually-impaired teens, many of whom tell me they are afraid to cook over an open flame, to use a grill, etc and this felt like another potential instance of something like that. I have no issue with different types of equipment at all; I was simply raising the spector of isolation through overadaptation.

I wanted to avoid specialized product mainly for two reasons. First is that if someone would actually make it, it would be too expensive because the field of protentional customers would be limited just for visually impaired. Secondly, I saw a study which says that compensatory aids sometimes result in social stigmas. And even if I don’t consider those two reasons, blind person still should be able to work with normal electric kettle, because they will very likely encounter it. So, in my logic, product should work same as normal, just with few features that would make process safer and easier.

Heating mugs (at least those I’ve seen) can’t boil water, they just warm it up/keep it warm. They are meant for different purpose than kettle. From my research I can say that if you want to boil water for one cup, you can use coffee machine, but even people who has coffee machine at home, still uses electric kettle, so I take kettle like a tool that can’t be easily replaced.
