Podcast for the visually impaired (self.Blind)
submitted by interesting_square
I’m a content producer and a client has asked me to produce a podcast around their content and products, with a focus on the target audience being visually impaired.

So that got me thinking, what might a podcaster do to make podcast content better for you as a blind or visually impaired person? Or what are things podcasters do that are wrong or bother you?

Appreciate the help.

* Spell complicated domain names and email addresses.
* Use cover art that is distinctive and well contrasted.
* Use chapter marks within your episode to allow someone to navigate to important bits.
* Use consistent audio levels, recognisable intro and outros and stick to a format.
* Tell your client that Podcasts, though beloved, are not the only channel of communication: there seems to be an attitude that because it's audio, it appeals more to a blind audience.

Excellent points. Picking up on the last one, make sure the website is accessible and consider publishing transcripts.

It's funny, I'd not thought about transcripts. I literally right-off the whole of the Podcasting ecosystem, because I just haven't the time: I'd rather read a blog post at my own pace than suffer through someone else talking about something. I'm the same with books; I find audiobooks painful.

The Story Collider does a great job all around with this. Every episode on their site includes the transcript so if you don’t want to hear the episode, you do not need to go to a separate area to read it.

I find it helpful when podcasts have trigger warnings in the beginning. A loud noise or a bang could trigger somebody in a negative way.

Look at what The Story Collider does, they are the best one I’ve seen.

Nothing at all for me, it's a podcast and the ones I listen to are bassed off of audio and not video so it's fine.
