What hobbies do you all have? (self.Blind)
submitted by lstar4ever
What I talk about hobbies with sighted or blind people, they always assume that blind people like me should have hobbies something like playing with musical instrument or listening to music or something like that.

Dont know why that have such assumption.

Personally I am not learning musical instrument at all, what about you? what is your hobby when you live with your blindness?

I think sighted people just have a hard time imagining what vision loss would be like, and they go to stereotypes of blind people.

Before I lost vision I used to game, go hunting and fishing, watched college sports (football and basketball), and code personal projects.

I don't really have enough vision to enjoy games anymore, but I do still listen to college sports. In fact, the radio broadcast for my favorite team are quite good and I can stream them online. I've toyed with the idea of going hunting and fishing with friends just to spend time with them. I'm trying to learn how to speak Spanish, and I read a lot of technical books. I still code.

I am completely blind, and I hunt. If I can help you out, let me know. The biggest thing about fishing is to take a glove so you don’t get finned.
Criptedinyourcloset 2 points 1y ago
Hey, I’ve always wanted to go hunting. I’m best at using bows and arrows. Any advice for that?
blind_cowboy 2 points 1y ago
I have some questions first. What do you want to hunt? Where are you? How much vision do you have?
nullatonce 1 points 1y ago
Can you please share how you do it ? (hunting/fishing). Planning to build bottom fishing (google translated this one lol) road for next summer :)

Thanks.

The free patterns I get can be computer read via fusion. Otherwise I’ve had luck asking a friend to bead out the pattern on one of those shrink beads oven cook things.

Most yarn shops have in-person classes if there’s one in your area.

I code, which used to be my profession before going blind, and am trying to get back into World of Warcraft with an add-on that I'm making that creates a screen-reader inside the game. I'm not entirely sure how all this will end since I'm navigating uncharted territory, but the experience has been quite entertaining so far. I also have other projects on stand-by as well as projects in the queue which I haven't even started working on yet.

Before returning to coding I thought I wasn't good enough to do it totally blind, or that I would lack things to do, because I imagined that computer graphics and graphical user interfaces were completely off-limits to me. However I ended up proving myself wrong in every respect, so now I'm working towards building a portfolio of projects developed as a blind programmer before trying to get back in the job market, as well as to regain confidence in my skills.

My partner listens to boatloads of audio books. Most libraries offer audio books (for free!) using the Overdrive app or the Libby app.

I fall into the stereotype, though I'm a synthesizer musician which apparently most blind musicians aren't. Besides that, I love working with tech and playing D&D.
purple_goat_8138 4 points 1y ago
I'm a stereo type too. I play guitar. Sort of, anyway.
Criptedinyourcloset 3 points 1y ago
Same. I’m your stereo typical blind nerd. I play audio games, I use garage band create all my songs, I called, very tech savvy, and I guess one of my weird hobbies is doing TTS. I make a lot of videos..

Some of my hobbies are: Watching anime, yeah, I'm blind but I'm very used to the anime sound design in general, computers, I like to repair, test things and stuff like this maybe I will try and start programing soon, shopping with my friends, gaming, I can't play video games anymore but I'm allways up to date with the latest gaming news, and stuff, and soon I want to stream on twitch but I don't know where to start.

I paint, draw, I sing (I can't share the singing howdy because that requires voice recording and I'm not able to do that.) I also do text-based role-plays( all of these are safe for work, any body who is interested you're welcome to join but you probably won't like it.) Also I like to read and I also plan to get into puppetry at some point I enjoyed puppets and they're one of my special interests along with Harry Potter and Disney and one of my other Hobbies is planning the perfect Disney trip which for me is rope drop to Park closed riding and doing everything and seeing every single Park and actually planning it for that even though I would be there for say two weeks I would spend three days straight doing rope drop support clothes so that I could do Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom. Why do you think I'm not including MGM Hollywood Studios I'll tell you why it's not a very big Park you could probably do Hollywood Studios in a day maybe you can do it in half of a day so I wouldn't waste the Rope drop day on that not unless you do in Galaxy's Edge you're going to do galaxies that you definitely need to do. Because Galaxy's Edge takes a while if cuz it's one of those places you actually need to pay attention to cuz there's like stuff and all sorts of different little things to look for and find.

D&D and boardgames, mostly. My visual acuity's about 20/100 (with a really narrow visual field), which is enough to play a ton of boardgames, with. some occasional accommodations.

I also read a lot - audio books and large print, and write. I'm about to start recording a new podcast with a friend, which is something we've done off and on together for about 10 years now.

Musical instrument? I'd love to be able to play one. I have zero desire to put in the effort required to learn one.
macadamia_owl 2 points 1y ago
I am legally blind learn playing guitar bur i do lot's of other stuff jewellery making, hotfix rhinestones decorations and glued, paper books reading with OCR, photography, horse riding, bow shooting, travelling, xbox games and playing games overall, poker, origami, drawing on tablet because i can zoom in and out erase have layers, kindle books and epub

In many countries for decades blind and low vision people were mainly doing jobs that were connected to music because of "improved" hearing or did manual work because choice was limited in blind schools. There were no access to studying or no integrated schools at all. So many people even now think that's all blind people do. In many countries there multiple festivals where many blind and disabled sing compete or raise money like that it's often shown in tv but sadly almost never other things like paralympics or what other things we can do. Average people think we have to live with parents be massage therapist or work in call center wear only sport choltes or jeans as hobbies only audiobooks, playing instruments

I’ve tried singing but I’m just not good at it. I like to cook, play D&D, exercising I guess?, listening to audiobooks and podcasts and I should be getting into tandem cycling soon after trying it out and liking it.

Well, I sing in choir and do a lot of music-related things. But I also like to cook, Nordic walking and to hang out in the city with my friends.
