Card games for visually impaired? (self.Blind)
submitted by officegringo
Hello all!

My mom is visually impaired. Due to brain damage she has absolutely zero periphery vision. She has described it like seeing through a keyhole. My Mom likes card games a lot. However, as she's getting older her vision is getting worse so now we're relegated to playing UNO (the color coordination and simple card design helps). We've also played Skip Bo with moderate success.

I'm not gonna lie guys, I'm getting real freaking tired of UNO. If you guys had any games or family activities to share (does not have to be card games), I'd love to hear them!

Thanks in advance!

Does she have an absolute favorite card game? Instead of finding a game she can play, find the game she wants to play and figure out a work around. There are Braille playing cards, and even though I’m sure she doesn’t know Braille, it’s fairly simple to learn four suits and 13 cards. There are even “talking cards” that work with a phone app — she could wear an earbud while playing.

I'll have to look into those. Thank you!

RPGs like DND are what your looking for, you would just need to roll the dies for her

I'm familiar with tabletop RPG's. I never connected it to playing with my mom though... Good idea!

they make large cards but they can be difficult to hold, can she read Braille? you can get normal cards with braille on them, gives more opportunities.

you can buy large domino bricks too, with clear dots/indents on them

I have a couple of suggestions. For one thing, get some plain cards they have cards with Frills on them so you can play sings psycho fish they also have giant sized playing cards as well. I'd also suggest looking into things like Cards Against Humanity there's no rule rules other than one person judging the other people's comments basically I'm probably remembering the wrong but that's how I remember it, so try that and I'm sure they have a visually impaired dedication for people that play too.

Teach her a little braille.
You can Braille cards yourself with a cheap plastic label machine or a slate and stylus. Braille numbers only requires learning 6 signs, 2 of which double for b=blue and g=green for uno.

How is she with computers / screen readers? Try setting her up with https://qcsalon.net, where she can play over 30 games with hundreds of people. That way she'll still have the uno but you won't have to be the one to play.

My mom is also technologically impaired too but I've had the thought of setting her up with an e-pad for a while now. also lol @

I have a completely computer-phobic friend, and we got him on the playroom by using a gamepad. up, down, left and right map to the keyboard arrow keys of course, then it's just specific game-pad buttons to see who's turn it is, draw acard, say uno, etc.

War or battle is an easy option since you can tell them who wins each round. Have you tried thise massive cards? Maybe those will help?

I will have to ask, but I totally forgot that they make larger cards! Sometimes larger things make it more difficult to see for her. Since she only has a narrow field of vision it's like she has to go over a larger surface area if that makes sense.
This did give me an idea to look for a higher contrast set of cards too. Thank you!

I also have no peripheral vision and poor central vision. Some of the card games I can play are:

- Love Letter: each card has a different ability but there are only 8 so it's not that hard to remember and not have to read
- Lost cities: each card just has a colour and number
- Exploding kittens: she will also have to memorize what each card does but they are quite identifiable
- 6 Nimmt: each card just has a number

I second lost cities. It’s a very fun game and the cards can be simply designed. I printed out a set and played it with my visually impaired friend.

Plastic poker game cards they hold up much longer than paper/carton ones have many different Designs even already with Braille. In School we had really cool deck that shines in dark a bit background was black and in normally light it was big numbers and letters on center and small ones in corners. There was fully Braille card deck and blind players were shown their cards by sighted partner often non player.
With regular cards there's hundreds of games just Google.

I enjoy wooden puzzle logic games
Learning picking up licks together? You don't have to see to open simple ones and it's useful skills I'd lose us forgotten or key lost. Most of them are was to open even electric ones see on YT lockpickinglawyer

Board games in my country it's called Ludo 2-4 players movement is was rules and board too.

There memory word games "i pick my travel bag and pack item1 " next person adds to it utem2 person 3 says all previous items game goes on till someone's forgets it's cool to add ridiculous stuff

Games with own and paper but phones or tablets can be used instead there's game "Countries and Cities" it's any number people game for better fun more.
There's 6 categories Country, city, animal, item, name, river as default but they can be switched.
One person says in mins alphabet other says stop letter is choose for example S.
Now players have time to as fast as possible find out words that begin with example letter here S example Country Sweden, City Singapur, Animal Snake...
When someone's finished all their categories fully countdowns from 10 to 0 and round ends all have to stop writing.
Scores points
If answer is right and nobody has it 2 pt
If answer is Right but more players have it too everyone gets 1 pt
If someone's has empty field or wrong answer 0 points.
I played it while still learning braille with friend's it was extra fun i showed them this game we played it in Notepad on PCs because Braille machines were too loud ;)

Blind people can play literally any card game. Just get tactile cards. If it's a speed game, play in the dark so you are on equal footing. Learning braille may be hard, but learning enough braille to read a deck of cards will probably just take a day.
