Looking for Braille books (self.Blind)
submitted by Thelastparanthropus
Hi! My stepfather is blind and he was talking about reading his Braille book again for the hundredth time so I thought I would look for one online. The only books I could find were for children or learning Braille. So if anyone knows where to get regular books for adults in Braille, I’d be very happy to know!

Is he in the US? If so he can borrow Braille books from National library services.

You all could also look into getting a refreshable Braille display that he can run electronic Braille files through from bard and Bookshare. You can find a few on the cheaper end that would be a better investment if he is willing to learn to use it than buying braille books. And it’s just downloading the files. The new brailliant let’s you do it over wifi. No computer needed. Just the device itself.

Connect with CNIB! They will help you get connected with CELA, that’s short for Canadian equitable library association. They have braille books, large print books, audio Disques, and MP3 files for computers and direct to player iPhone apps!

Once he is set up and registered as legally blind, CNIB has so many tools and activities he could take part in. I’ve been joining book clubs, music bingo nights, cooking sessions, exercise classes and technology workshops. There’s even galas and tons of stuff. They teach you how to navigate your home with less eyesight and help with tools to make every day things a breeze to do! I make my own tea, take walks with my dog, label leftovers, Embroidery and even started learning piano! They have tools such as liquid level indicators to help pour liquids without spilling, bumpy stickers for easier access to microwaves and other textile buttons, extra large clocks, and so many other things not even including the white cane if needed.

They have completely changed my life, I went from sitting in a dark room doing absolutely nothing to getting my hobbies, interests, and curiosity back :)

My next step… Is to try and get back into gaming. It’s going to be complicated but dang it I believe I can figure it out! The tools are there you just got a learn what works for you. Hope you can find some interesting new things for him!

Looks like you can find books here? $1 /

So here’s the thing, Braille code switched in $1 so you need to know which code he reads. He’d still get the gist but there’s some things he might not. He is probably familiar with EBAE (or the Canadian equivalent), today almost al English speaking countries us UEB. Once you know his code you can search the Googles!
