Question for those who are blind from birth(self.Blind)
submitted by NoClops
I’m watching a show that has audio description, and it described one of the characters as the tall brunette. I was born completely sided and slowly lost my vision over the first 20 or so years of my life, and I remember what the color brunette looks like. For those of you who are blind from birth, I’m curious if this sort of description adds anything/is useful to your experience.

It isn’t really that useful to me, but sometimes it helps with quick seen changes with multiple characters. As a sidenote, the audiodescriber trying to describe a facial expression and then putting there own spin on the emotional state of the character is interesting too, like we can’t devise how the character is feeling via voice and tone. I notice this more so with things described from the UK vs united states.

…or when it tells us the person slammed the door, because it’s not like we heard it or anything. Hahah

it's just a label to me, like blond, Tall, etc.
NoClops [OP]7 points1y ago
Is there a definition to the label blonde, though? I assume that one would have a fuller understanding of the concept of tall, as that’s something you can experience with a different sense. What does blonde mean to you? Or is it simply something to determine a difference and that difference is enough for you.

It's true I can engage more with an idea like tall, but only when able to compare with something else. So if I'm talking to a tall person, even though I can't see them, I can contrast their height with my own.
But when meeting virtually or attending a presentation where I have no physical contact with someone the labels all feel the same to me,whether I have experience with them or not. Does that make sense?
Colours and other visual concepts are just labels, though. I tend to forget them. I couldn't even tell you what colour my own eyes or hair are, because they just are never relevant day-to-day.

I think I understand what you mean. Thanks.
I consider myself lucky because I have the memory of color, but not the resttrictions of them in my daily life. So, if the item I want to buy isn’t available in the color I want, I just imagine its that color. In the sighted world, our car is blue. I hate blue; though, so to me, it’s black. There’s been a few times I’ve forgotten something is a certain color only to me, and I confuse people.

Nothing at all. If every woman in the world died her hair bright green it would make no difference to me.
I bet the words for colors have cultural asociation to me, but I don't think I've ever seen colors, so the color of a woman's hair is uninteresting to me. Although tall is meaningful.

Most colours are fairly meaningless to me except the simple ones, but I still like knowing. I'm more than capable of researching, asking friends/family, etc. if a specific appearance or colour interests me and I want to look into it more.

What constitutes a basic color?
smarthome_fan2 points1y ago
Like black, yellow, orange, red, blue.
Rather than: beige, puce, mauve, purple.
NoClops [OP]1 points1y ago
Makes sense. I’m a little curious why purple is in the complex colors, though. Can you explain?
smarthome_fan2 points1y ago
Isn't it a combination of blue and red?
oncenightvaler2 points1y ago
To me, it matters that the character is tall and brunette because that's what everybody else sees. If you asked me to describe brown I wouldn't have much of an idea besides saying it's the colour of dark chocolate, of dirt. I know it's on the darker end of the spectrum, but not as dark as black, maybe less dark than gray.
I recently (from here) heard colours described something like this: since they are frequencies of waves of light think of them as notes on a scale. There are lower notes and higher notes but all on the same spectrum.

That’s a really great way of explaining it. Thanks for sharing!

Meaningless label. Colors are just arbitrary words for me.
NoClops [OP]1 points1y ago
I’m curious about your user name…

I like goats, but I wanted to be a different goat. lol.

Edit: Made the post easier to read.
It doesn't help me personally but think it would be weird if it wasn't there.
NoClops [OP]2 points1y ago
Why do you think it would be weird?
bradley223 points1y ago
I dunno, AD would just sound strange without descriptions of colours and things like that.

Is there a reason you think we can't read?

Why are you here?

Screen readers exist and so do Braille displays that allow screens to be read in Braille
