I hate the term life hack. It's click bait and I refuse to use it. So this is definitely not a life hack. But sometimes a person stumbles across an idea that works out so perfectly it seems selfish not to share it with others who might benefit from it. That happened to me today.
I have an Ambutech folding graphite white cane. My only issue with it is the handle is really thin. It's only half an inch (12 millimeters) in diameter. I want a fatter handle, something I can grip tightly if I need to.
We have some resistance bands for exercising. They're just bungee cords with grip handles. WalMart has them in the sporting goods aisle. The link is
$1. I thought I'd try to slip one of the grip handles over the grip of my white cane to see if it fit.
It fit. Perfectly. The foam handle on the cane compresses just enough to make an amazing fit. Tight enough that it doesn't have any slack but loose enough that I was able to slide it over the cane without using any tools. All I had to do was cut the fabric strap off of the resistance band grip.
This only applies to Ambutech folding graphite canes. I haven't tried it on any other cane. If the original grip just feels too skinny in your hands you might want to give this a try. And if it works, just smile and tell people it's your new life hack.
