Best way to get new audiobooks on CD (For my Grandma)(self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
Hi R/blind,
My Nan has been slowly losing her sight over the past 10 years and it's gotten to the point where she's officially blind. Initially I thought audible would be perfect for her but then I remembered she had no means or desire to get wifi. Shes very proficient on her walkman and is aware on how to change the CDs per chapter.
At present she has a few audiobooks on CD but the repositories on Amazon are wearing thin. I was wondering if anyone is in a similar boat and had some advice for her.
God bless :)

One of the best places I found to find these were both the library, and to buy them off eBay.
The problem as you already found out, is that audiobooks have been shifted over into downloadable formats these days.
Now you COULD download the files and then burn the files to multiple audio CD's... But if you have to stick with the audio CD format I think you'll probably be stuck with eBay as a prime source. Otherwise, you'll be sinking a lot of time burning CD's.
One option is to make MP3 CDs. That way, you can fit a book (or even a whole series) on one 700MB disk. Newer CD players will play both Audio AND MP3 CDs. It might be worth looking at that as a good compromise. Plus, she wouldn't need to change disks very often. Still a familiar CD, just a LOT more audio on it.

Thanks so much I'll check out eBay and bare the mp3 consideration in mind.
Cheers!

If you are in the US you can try the $1. Also, local libraries and used book sales often (still) have books on CD.

Their books come on cartridges which you play on an easy-to-use device. No wi-fi required.

Here in the U.S., our local libraries still have a pretty decent collection of books on CD. Can’t speak for other countries though.

Where do you live? In the US, book stores such as Barnes & Noble or used bookstores like Half Price Books have large selections.
Edit: also, used places like eBay or goodwill have a lot

They're in the UK, or perhaps Australia/new zealand, I'm from the UK and call my nan, well, nan.

The national library for the blind offers an amazing digital player. They send cartridges via mail and they are quite easy to use. Its freeand she can order them by phone. Google NLS for the blind.

Perhaps an Alexa might help her? Once you've set up the device you can play audiobooks from the device by saying, alexa, play, name of book.
I think you have to buy the books from audible though so you'll probably have to do that.
