Help a blind guy figure out how to open the trap of a sink and clean it successfully(self.Blind)
submitted by Bachelor-pad-72
Hey guys, I have no idea how to access the trap of a sink. I know you need to go under the counter of course presumably right where the drain was empty into underneath the sink but I do not know how to unscrew things what to do if I push if I Pull Help! I would be really appreciative of any input on how to do this also what other blind persons experiences have been doing this if they have

I am not blind nor am I a plumber, but I've had to do this a few times.
The trap is underneath the drain. It's usually a U shaped piece of pipe. There is probably a section of pipe from the drain that goes down to a separate bent piece of pipe, it will bend completely back up and then bend again going sideways or down. It might also be a bowl-shaped thing.
It will have water and gunk in it! Prepare yourself to be using your fingers in nasty stuff. In my experience, it's not too hard to unscrew both ends of the trap and drain it/clean it out. It may be attached with big plastic ring-shaped nuts which go around the pipe. So imagine, there's a pipe with a ring-shaped nut around it...it can slide freely up and down the pipe a bit, but at the end it's stopped by a lip. The ring kind of hangs off the end of that pipe, and it's got screw threads on the inside. The other pipe has a threaded end. So the ring can screw onto the other pipe, and it pulls the two ends together and seals them.
There are other possibilities, but we can hope that you're fairly standard. If you put your hand on the bottom of the U-shape, then move it up to the upper ring, you may feel the flat edges of the nut. Usually you can just use your hand to unscrew it. Most screws are removed by turning counter-clockwise. If that reference doesn't make sense, make a ring with your right hand's thumb and forefinger - your thumb is pointing clockwise around the ring, and your forefinger is pointing counter-clockwise. So, if the ring on the top of the trap is screwed onto the trap, you need to turn it counter-clockwise from the perspective of looking down from the sink. If you're laying on your back under the sink then you may have to do some mental adjustment to figure out which way that is. Remember whatever is in the sink will be pouring out! Unscrew both ends of the trap and it should be removable.
I would also mention there are a few other things you might find attached to the pipe coming from the drain. One might be a little side-pipe or thing sticking out the side with a metal stick going into the drain pipe - that's the lever that is attached to the drain closer/opener. You probably don't need to mess with it, but if you do have to take that apart it may be tricky to get it back together without vision.
Another might be an attachment from your dishwasher where the dishwasher drains into. That will be another pipe going into the side of the drain pipe. Again, you probably don't have to mess with that.
Good luck...

This is a really great explanation! Thank you so much for providing this for those who may need assistance with this sort of task.

some of these comments are very good. I am blind and clean out my sink trap all the time. Just remember that you need a bucket to catch the water and go ahead and put down alot of towels. O and if you have cats put them somewhere else, they always want to help you under the sink. :) Be well mate and live the life you dream

Are you cleaning the elbow? Make sure you put a bowl underneath the area, the should be a “letter U” shape in the pipes, two twist off pieces on each side of the “U” the can typically be hand twisted off. Once loose, the pipe will come loose or off, if there is a clog, this is when the water will come out. Empty it into the bowl, clean the disconnect pipe in a separate sink, then reattach.
I’m sorry i don’t know your status of blindness and if you recognize the term U shape and can’t think of a good tacticile way to describe it. Half circle maybe?

I've had to do this several times with my bathroom sink. My trap is made of plastic & has connectors that unscrew by hand. Taking it apart is fairly easy but it's always a challenge to put it back together. If I don't line it up correctly, it will leak. I keep a bucket underneath to make sure.

People have been really helpful, but have you thought of trying drain cleaner or something? Might save you the hassle of having to go under the sink.

Rarely works when a drain is already backed up, and the chemicals can burn you(or a plumber) when working on it later! Elbow grease is the gold standard.

There are also cheap plastic snakes at Lowes to grab stuff in the future (not quite that far down).
