Any recommendations for an overhead electronic magnifier camera? (self.Blind)
submitted by ignoremesenpie
Hi there. I'm legally blind, and I am looking into an overhead magnifier that I can use when reading print books as well as writing by hand (specifically writing by hand in Japanese and English). I used a $1 but I returned it because it seemed like the Transformer could not keep up with the handwriting task due to low-end computer specs.

I'm looking into it again because I now have a system that should be more than enough to do the job. Unfortunately, The options I've come across range from $2,500 to $3,000 CAD, which are way out of my price range.

I'm thinking whatever this $1 uses, pictured on the bottom right corner of the screen, might be ideal depending on price. Unfortunately, I don't know the model, and searching for stuff like "electronic magnifier camera" on Amazon brings up microscopes.

What you want to look for are called "Document Cameras". These are usually used in schools to show a paper on the screen. As long as you don't need any special features that most Video Magnifiers / CCTVs have (false colors, negative image, OCR, etc.) a document camera will work fine; some even connect to HDMI so you can just connect them to a 32" (or any other size TV.

This one will work either with a computer or without (with just a TV and is $200.

Document camera! Perfect!

I tend not to use the other colour settings on my CCTV (Merlin; the light blew out and it's right in my face if I insist on normal writing posture, but that's a rant for another time), at least aside from the high contrast black and white ones, but I can probably replicate that through software if I wanted.

Thanks again for the info!

Commenting because I'm interested in this too.

My 54 year old brother has lost almost all his vision. He had something similar but it broke. He lives alone and is very independent. I didn’t think about Reddit.
