Christmas list ideas? (self.Blind)
submitted by yoyo2718
Hey all. My family is already asking me what I might like for Christmas and since I am newly visually challenged I thought this might be a good opportunity to ask for some things that would be fun for the new me, or make life easier. Not looking for high cost items. I was thinking of asking for some games I can play with my young elementary aged kid, like mancala or some tactile dominos. I’m still learning the Braille alphabet but I do have one of those Braille label maker things that makes stickers, it’s been useful for labeling simple game cards and pill containers. I’ve found it really useful. What else do you guys use a LOT that makes life easier for someone new to a less visual life, or adds to family fun? Tia

Edit: Great ideas, thanks everyone! Please keep them coming. I just ordered myself a motivational splurge…a Brailled Apples to Apples Jr. from 64 oz games with QR code’s for when I get stuck and can’t figure out the Braille. It’ll be a fun study aid.

Last year for Christmas my friends gave me this really thoughtful gift. It's a remote and a set of beeping tags that I put on my cell phone, keys, wallet, that way I can press the remote and they will beep at me so I can locate them.

Also I love the voice activated stuff, Alexa, or Google Home, etc.

I had Braille labelled measuring cups, and now I have metal measuring cups with raised labels.

A talking thermometer, scale, Braille watch/talking watch.

Would you have a link or can give me a brand and product name so I could look these up?

A talking food thermometer & talking kitchen scales are both very useful and make cooking a lot easier.

A pair of wireless Aftershokz bone conduction head phones could useful for listening to your phone and still being able to hear the world around you. They're handy when you're in situations where you need to listen to what's going on around you for safety. I use them a lot when I go out walking, so I can listen to music and still hear traffic.

Last year for Christmas I asked for a signature guide for when you need to sign something. I also asked for a liquid indicator. You put it into your glass and it beeps when the liquid hits the prongs so you know when to stop pouring. The cost was about 7 to $10 each

Whats your vision like? I'm new to it as well and i have virtually no central vision left now, just my peripheral. I have found I can still play video games that don't use too much text. I have also really gotten into playing music on various instruments, namely the lyre.

Where do you even find a lyre. I heard some ancient Greek music played on it, and it sounds nifty.

My vision is weird. My acuity isnt terrible, but I’m functionally blind because it makes me super ill to use it, so I keep my eyes closed a lot. Any kind of motion or screens is not tolerable to me, so I think video games (other than audio) are out, I do like instruments though. I play violin and am learning ukulele. My Braille skills are pretty noob, I can only read individual letters, or words if the letters have a space in between. Working on that, but for now, tactile games with minimal Braille are easiest for me. We are a big board game family.

A year long Audio book subscription?
Or a dinner subscription like Hello Fresh?, that's not cos of the VI (though it might be handy as a way to "retrain") but just as a treat!

I use Bard for audiobooks, but maybe new headphones would be good, thanks for the inspiration!

If you look up a shop like ncbi or If your local nfb has an online shop they can have affordable practical things like talking kitchen weighing scales, talking watch, or a smart tv that's operated by voice!
