Grocery Cart/Trolley with a cane? (self.Blind)
submitted by Mamamagpie
So I’m new to using a cane and headed to the market, and trying to wrap my head around using my cane and pushing a cart.

Advice?

Don't push. Pull. Go in front of it and either pull it from the front, or back. I find it easier not to pull from the handle, as it is at an inconvenient hight behind my back for pulling, but if you are at the right height, it may work for you. Good luck,

Pull all the way. I used to pull my daughter around in grocery carts. "Eggs astern!" "Cocopuffs leeward!" "Dog food off the port bow!" . We got some incredibly odd looks, I am sure. But boy was it fun.

This OP. Its what my friend used to do because "you're not walking fast enough"

I’ve always been too scared to try. Thanks for the encouragement!

I generally ask if the store can provide me with someone to assist me with my shopping. They normally push the cart & I just follow. It makes grocery shopping much quicker.

do they have rolling baskets where you live/shop? it's the shopping baskets with a long handle that you drag behind you like rolling luggage, makes it a lot easier to walk with a cane but I don't know how widespread those are

Not in many stores. I only have hemianopsia, so I can partially see fairly well. I use a cane because I tend to trip over thing on my blindside.

How are you going and getting back home? When I was going alone and needed to carry my stuff, I took an empty backpack and placed items in it so that I could then pay and carry them home.

I walk. I have insulated shopping bag.

Cool if its easy to carry, you could place the items you are buying in that bag. And if you can't carry an item while walking at the store, you'll probably not be able to walk home either.

When I've been shopping for more than I could carry, I call an Uber. And I do the shopping with a custumer service assistant who pulls the cart, while I hold it from the push bar.

If someone already suggested this, pardon me. You can use a cart you can buy from walmart, or the hard ware store that you pull behind you. You can get a small, or large one. Then when you get to the store you can put your cart in the buggy, folding it down and laying it on the bottom of the top part of the cart, or the bottom part. Pull the store's cart behind you as you use your cane with the other hand. You could even just ask for help and pull your cart you have from home if you buy/bought one. And they'll help you around the store , depending how much time you have/ how much vision/ what you feel comfortable with. They are there to help you. :) I've been loosing vision, I was born with low/ low ish vision, but since last mid/late summer I have been loosing vision and I am legally blind.

Pull the backside of the buggy/cart. The part opposite to the part with the handle you would push. Grab the left back area with a curve to the right and pull behind you and use your cane ahead of you. :) Like you normally would. :)
