Riding bus with voice over on. Had no ear phones, only 1, or 2 other people on the bus besides myself. The bus driver told me to put in ear phones when I was using voice over, I had the volume down, someone said from the back to turn the sound down, I turned it down more then she said turn it off.(self.Blind)

That doesn't seem fair, does it? I turned it so low I could barely hear it with it up to my ear. :(
lucas185319 points1y ago
Gonna take the unpopular opinion here and say you should've had headphones or ear buds, unless there is some other reason that you cannot wear them. Just being VI isn't necessarily an excuse to have audio broadcasting over speakers without headphones like some other people are claiming. Similarly, it is rude to be on a call on speaker or play music without headphones in public, even if you are sighted. There is a level where it's unreasonable to ask somebody to turn it off, like if it is really so low that you could barely hear it as you claim, but headphones would solve the issue entirely.
BlindLuck728 points1y ago
Agreed! I’m blind I get your situation but just because we are disabled doesn’t mean we can subject others to unnecessary things. Just like they shouldn’t talk on the phone, and I shouldn’t let my guide dog bother other people who are just trying to get from point A to B

it was a bad day yesterday i have pain in my bladder, had go to eye dr it just wasn't a good day to prepare. i had to runa nd hop on bus, i tried to cancel a dr visit. I under stand be respectful to tohers because u wwant them be respectful to u just there was 2 ppl on the bus and it just seemed funny ... i don't use it to much because i can't hear it good on the bus anyway and i have trouble hearing my hearing has gotten worse cause tinitis it sounds like it's thundering sometimes lol.
BlindLuck721 points1y ago
I get it and I’m not saying things are always easy. We still need to do our best regardless of the situation. Today is a new day hopefully it’s going a bit better
[deleted] [OP]0 points1y ago
it's ok. no bus riding. just mostly staying home so it's fine :) I'm ok. :)
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
yesterday was a bad day. i wasn't feeling well in my bladder and i had to go on the bus I didn't have breakfast and i had to go to the eye drand i'm loosing vision and i am just about ready to AAHHHH!! ok.. i feel better.. i guess LOL!!!! oh well.. the joys of riding the bus!!! :) HAHAHA!
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
well only 2 ppl besides me were on the bus and i was being quiet, even the fellow beside me was shocked because he wasn't bother, i gottta find another way beside ear phones, or ear buds cause ear bus hurt my ears and earphones move around. :o I have some hearing trouble in both ears. ;(
Iamheno14 points1y ago
I’ve just recently started spendine more time around others with BVI and voiceover is the one thing I find most annoying. I personally always put in a Bluetooth earbud when I use it. But IMO, it’s also rude to put calls on speaker phone in public I put using VO without earbuds in the same category.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
i dont use it much i use it just now n then not all the time. most times i use it for a minute or so read a quick message. i'm not one of those ppl who have it going blah blah blah real fast. idk any other blind /visimapired ppl in my area so idk what it is like.
fireborn147212 points1y ago
seems fair to me. Earbuds exist that allow you to hear your surroundings, both wired and wireless.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
it's ok. i have tinitis and tinitis and being visually impaired do not go well together, I don't like holding the phone to my ear. I hear ringing sometimes, hissing, or buzzing and boom boom boom too. Sometimes I almost hear nothing, but it's quite anonoying. LOL! It was a very bad day yesterday. I'm just going through a difficult time with loosing vision and having other health issues and having to move to another apartment if I get approval and trying to get help. :) So just kinda having tough time. I'm fine. I don't have blind/leglly blind/visually impaired friends. i don't know what it is like to be among other people in my local area. :) It would be nice, that's ok, normally I'm quiet. I don't make noise much, just sit and wait for my stop, or bus driver. I wish they'd turn those sounds on that say where youa re at all the time. :o
AllHarlowsEve10 points1y ago
It's definitely crappy of them, but I get it. Other people's voiceover annoys me more than anything. I'm a naturally quiet person though, and I always have earbuds with me
Complex_Platform_9818 points1y ago
I’m hoping you advocated for yourself and said it was voice over because you are BVI!! That’s not okay. I am sorry you had to deal with that.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
it's ok i guess. i only used it for a few fb messages. i just wasn't feeling well and i kept getting texts and at the end i was trying to find where my stop is and i kept saying im trying to find mys top i'll talk to u.. lol but i don't use voice over to much i am just trying to learn it all, i know about 85% of it. :) I know there's a rule for it, but it was very low, just some guy who was behind me got upset and then the bus driver didn't hear it and then she said turn it off so i turned it off. it's jsut easier to stick my nose to it and read it lol
SoapyRiley7 points1y ago
It’s just polite to not be making a lot of noise in a public place. I usually turn voiceover off if I’m without my headphones so the only noise from my phone is WeWALK announcing the stops and I’ll turn the volume down and hold the speaker to my ear. Nobody seems to have a problem with that but I can see where they’d annoyed if my texts and responses were being read out loud. I’d say keep a spare set of cheap wired headphones on you if you forget your regular pair just for these instances. It’s not like they’re heavy or take up much room and then nobody can complain and you get your privacy.
[deleted] [OP]0 points1y ago
i honestly didn't have it blasting, i t was a bad day yesterday. i just need to find something for me to do on the bus. lol to bored. especially if you're waiiting on the bus to see how much if any vision have I lost this time. just frustrated. it's ok. i usually don't make any noise. :O) i have used voice over, but in small quantities, i don't have blind/visually imapired/legally blind friends so I don't have the luxury of getting annoyed of people's voice over. I am sure I could imagine. :p
DrillInstructorJan5 points1y ago
I don't want to make excuses for bad behaviour, but I wonder if that bus driver just didn't really understand what it was. Most people have it going so fast that it just sounds like a noise if you aren't used to it. It absolutely is an annoying noise and sometimes I have found myself wanting to stop hearing it, not exactly getting a headache from it, but just a sort of fatigue effect from being nailed in the ear drums by that same monotone all the time.
But yes, this is what ear buds are for. Obviously people should not really object to it, I'm sure we'd all rather just be able to glance at the screen. I'd be inclined to try to explain what it was, I guess, and no, you shouldn't have to do that, and you don't have to, but if you can find the spirit to do it, you are helping.
[deleted] [OP]4 points1y ago
She wasn't a very nice bus driver from when I got on. She dropped me off in the mud instead of seven feet away at the shelter. Guess she was saying Don't be bad again. :o Ugh. Life is getting to me. I guess I'll just make stupid jokes and keep going. Sad day yesterday. I'm ok. Nobody really cares I just wanted to vent and I did andnow I don't care anymore. LOL! :O( Sorry. People really don't care anymore what you are doing, or I'll only use it for a minute, or thirty seconds, or I'll just use it for a quick message. They don't care. Don't care at all. Most people are not so nice. She wasn't nice. I just sat there most of the time. I need to ride the bus and I can't afford to have a problem so I ride and try to just wait till I get there to vent in my head a bit. Or a lot. LOL!!!!! Bad bad! :p
DrillInstructorJan1 points1y ago
Oh vent away, much better to do it here than in real life!
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
oh idk she just said turn it off. she didn't know i tried to explain, but it doesn't matter. lot of times i hear music and noise on the bus and i din't think voice over almost on 10 maybe would bother anyone.. :O I guess i was wrong. :) Next time i would just not use it on the bus just frustrating but it's ok... :O I haven't been feeling good and i was upset yesterday. nbody really cares why u neeed something they just want u to hush. even talking i've been told not talk on the bus so be quiet and hush and don't have any fun on the bus. so i just sit quietly and be alone. :s
YouDownWithTPP5 points1y ago
The heck??? That is so strange. Sorry you were on a bus with two miserable people, OP!
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
Ah, it's life. I was having a bad day. I've been to so many eye drs this year and my dr is retiring and I'm just having a lot of vision problems/health problems. I just needed a little extra patience yesterday. :o(
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
normally lots of ppl are on the bus like 25 or more but that day was two, the guy even by me even seemed to feel bad, but just use it home or somewhere else. i guesss :)) heheee.. :D it's my fault iw as trying to teach myself there's still things i don't know
i don't know if i am gonna loos eall my vision or not.
Raf_AL3 points1y ago
I'm surprised people can still get mad about blind people using assistive technology in 2021. On the other hand, there are people out there that are more sound-sensitive than others.
Like many others have said here, the best thing to do would probably have been to inform the individuals about voiceover and why you have to use it.
From personal experience, it's always easier to tell yourself to stand up for yourself than actually do it. I usually try to not take things people say too personally while in public. Who knows, maybe the individual just had a bad day and simply gets annoyed at everything that day.
That doesn't excuse people from being jerks tho. Stand up for yourself if you feel you can do it. Keep using voiceover without earbuds, as long as you do stuff that you don't want to keep private.
We got your back in this community.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
I'm vey sensitive to certain sounds because they hurt my ears. ouchy. I have tinitis. I have had it for about 11 years. :( It's ok. I am loosing vision and just needed some patience. No shut up ride bus and be grateful. Tada. Go off bus and just grouch to yourself for a few minutes and then you might feel better. LOL! I do that. LOL!!! I can't help but laugh right now, but then I wanted to almost cry.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
people don't want u to make noise they want to u to keep ear phones on but i hear my heart beat and i don't like how ear buds feeel they hurt my ears and my ears sound like BOOM BOOM BOOM sometimes it wouldn't work so good maybe maybe i'm just a doof. LOL! idk :(
ignoremesenpie3 points1y ago
Sorry to hear that.
You must stand up for yourself. You must explain the purpose of the voice over if it is not clear that you are blind. If they threaten you out as a consequence, note whatever info you can and file a complaint with the proper authorities.
It can be easy for people to get away with discriminatory behaviour, like if literally everyone else would feel better if you disabled your assistive technology. And because it can be so easy to pull off, one deterrent is often to make sure there's hell to pay for their discriminatory actions.
I remember there was a huge debate about guide dog entry refusals a few years ago. Apparently it's still a huge debate because the issue is not fully resolved. Wanna know why? Because people don't make a big enough deal about it.
lucas18535 points1y ago
This is different because, with a guide dog, there isn't really an acceptable level of mitigation on the part of the establishment or other patrons of the establishment, unless they are allergic to dogs. It's a method for navigation, you shouldn't be able to take that away when some people may not be comfortable with any other alternatives. In this case, headphones are pretty much a perfect solution, unless as I said in my own post there is some reason OP actually cannot wear them.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
i've had guide dogs. It can be frustrating. I am just using my cane now. Ugh. :'( I lost my dog to a pitt bull attack. :'( I'm loosing vision, but it's life. Just gotta sit on the bus, hush and wait till you get off then you can vent for a while after you get off. People don't care any more, you're always bother them. Not you, I mean generally people are always bothering other people. People are less patiant now a days. :o(
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
i've tried but people don't take me seriously. :s I don't want to yell at people. i just want to mind my own bizness. :o( Oh well. :O() I was feeling bad and having a sad day. :( It's life. :)) Hope she enjoys her car when she goes off work. :)) i wish I could. :) ENjoy my own car. :/ :((
bradley222 points1y ago
Hey mate, you might want to look into bone conduction headphones, they don't go in your ears, they sit on the underside of your jaw, i'm not sure what that's called, the bass isn't very good and they can be expencive iff you go for a well known brand like aftershox but you can get cheeper ones.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
Thank yoU! :) I've been considering that. :D O: i'll have to try some.I just wondered if it can hurt your bones since it's vibrating on them?
bradley221 points1y ago
I don’t think so :)
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
sorry i don't mean to come off rude, or nutty, just going through a difficult situation and I didn't even ride the bus home because they dilated my eyes and I was so confused where stuff was and I called my friend so it was ok on the way home. I'm just having a difficult time last year. Brother died, loosing vision, having health issues, having to move to another apartment even though i'm in a smoke free bldg because woman near me is smokign and i have lung issues .. just a hard time, but i'll beok. don't worry it's ok :)
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
ah well you get used to it. not your car not your rules. just shut up and ride the bus then get off of it and do what u want even if other ppl are blasting music, or yelling. lol oh well. Lol :)))
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
cause sometimes that the case and the bus driver says nothing. so hush you bad blind people. lol XD i'm a bad bad kitty. :P LOL!
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
try hearing boom boom boom boom boom in your ears. that's so fun! :D I just love it. I wish someone could fix it. AAHHH! LOL!!!
WorldlyLingonberry401 points1y ago
Hi, some people are rlly bothered by the sound of our screen readers. My mother's head hurts when she hears the screen reader. It goes beyond just hearing it and not understanding what it's saying. Try using bone cunduction headphones, these don't go in the ear.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
yeah i don't use it much, but that's life i just gotta wait till i get off the bus n then use it. she must have been mad at me she dropped me off in the mud instead of the bus shelter near by. surprised
WorldlyLingonberry401 points1y ago
That is mest up, you should report the driver. Placing you in the mud actually put you at risk of injury. Mud is slippery and when getting off the bus, you could have stepped and fallen down.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
I guess it was all dried up, or something. :O) I'm just disapointed sometimes cause I really am just having a hard time with life right now. frustrated face LOL!
VI_Shepherd1 points1y ago
Guess it depends... What were you needing to read?
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
text. not big deal. :) I just turned off and read it with my eye balls hope im gonna have vision to read it the next year because i will have to figure another way. :o some ppl don't care what u do some ppl do u have to go what they want. everyone is trying to run your life for you. just have to be quiet and smile even though u want to cry or something. :/ oh well. i d love to be in my car jamming but .. oh wait.. i don't have a car or the vision.. oopsie :D HEHEHE :D
Sommiel0 points1y ago
You need to report it to the transit company. They take ADA access super seriously.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
they have a rule and i can't go against it. i have to do what they say so i won't be kicked off. I asked the port authority. no noise. everyone SSSHHH! :b hehehe. just hush on the bus n wait till u get off then use it on the bus shelter? i guess. i didn't think it would be a big deal honestly. I wasn't trying to be rude. I just wanted to play with voice over and see how I can use it. I taught myself last december. Most of it. :o
magouslioni6900 points1y ago
Would it be illegal if you refused?
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
she'd probably stop the bus and make me get off of it. :o and i had an eye appt. blind ppl should be seen but not racket with their phone keep quiet sshh they say. :O(
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
I'm just trying to be silly because yesterday I was feeling kinda depressed. I'm loosing visionn and my bladder was hurting since friday. I've been having depression. Ah, well shut up already keep that racket off Ya blindy!!! Me? Sorry.. oh ok.. :( SAD FACE!!! \*i'm trying to be funny, but it doesn't make me laugh. :'( It's ok you just do ur best to live your life. Noone wears your shoes and you don't wear their shoes so you just try to be nice and then grumble when you get off the bus for a few minutes and then you might feel better. LOL!!! :) I'm not laughing idk what to say. :() I'm having a difficult time righ tnow. I'm not loony toons I'm just kinda depressed a bit, a lot. I need help,b ut maybe i can get help when i loose more vision. it's ok. :) happy face. :D
magouslioni6901 points1y ago
Would a passenger be able to do that? Also, if you don't mind, what device were you using and what was the volume
AutisticPearl-1 points1y ago
I I've had this happen to me before but with the speech to text instead of VoiceOver.
[deleted] [OP]1 points1y ago
oh.. maybe if someone comes on and blasts their boom box u can turn it on. :p
