Is there a good book I can buy for sighted people to learn braille? (self.Blind)
submitted by Plasstuck
Pretty much what the title says. If anybody here knows some kind of book that can teach a sighted person to read braille I'd love to hear about it. Also is there such a thing as a braille printer or typewriter of some kind that can punch braille lettering onto a paper? Or some way to write in braille?

Hadley Institute has a good braille course that is offered to both VI/blind and sighted people who support them. At no charge anywhere in the world.

There is a device called a brailler that is basically a typewriter for braille. It can be quite expensive, though ($400-$600 for some models).

There is also a slate and stylus, which is much cheaper. But you also braille backwards, so there is a bit of a learning curve for that.

Just Enough to Know Better is a book for sighted parents of blind children. It's $20.

Definitely start with a slate! Braille printers exists, but they're very expensive. A slate will set you back $20 or less, depending on how big it is. Google "Braille slate" and you'll find plenty.

Amazon has a book called Braille for the Sighted. I don’t know if it’s any good because I had to learn to touch read it. There are printers for the computer. There’s also Perkins Braillers that are essentially Braille typewriters. Both are wickedly expensive. The affordable way to write Braille on paper is a slate and stylus which are about $5-$20 USD depending on size.
