Embossed braille learning book (self.Blind)
submitted by blue_nipples
My MIL is legally blind. She has a hard time reading things and her vision is getting worse. She’s mentioned before that she wished she was taught braille as a child and she wants to learn now. I was thinking about getting her a book on learning braille for Christmas but all I can find is “braille for the sighted.” She’s completely fine with getting gifts that have to do with her being blind as long as they aren’t making fun of her in any way, so I know this won’t offend her. I feel like it would be much easier for her to learn if the book was embossed but I can’t find any like that. Any suggestions?

If you are based out of the US, check with them. They can do correspondence Braille classes.

You can also contact your local agency regarding in-person training.

Where are you located? Most countries have free correspondence courses for learning braille by touch. As a gift, perhaps you could buy her a braille board or card game so she can practise her braille. If you tell me where you're located, I can suggest local suppliers of such games.

In east TN. I’ve looked at the braille cards but thought that it might not teach proper spacing. Also, not sure if she would be into a whole course. She tends to procrastinate a lot. I don’t really see her going through with learning unless she has a physical book she can use and look at as she feels like.

The braille course offered by the Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired consists of multiple parts, and you're expected to take your time with it, so I'd recommend you consider it for her.

Braille cards will have correct spacing if you buy them from a reputable supplier. I recommend MaxyAids, Independent Living Aids, LS&S and the National Federation of the Blind Independence Market.
