Curious, do any of you ignore films/tv that lack AD? It is on my mind because of my experience of watching the film the Machinist on Netflix. I had seen it before, the first time I watched it was without AD, the second time was with AD via Netflix. The second time around really contextualized the film in a new way for me. I have a decent amount of useable vision but still find many films and shows too difficult to follow and appreciate when they lack AD. I keep waffling on weather I should just ignore a film or show, if it lacks AD. Regardless, I am grateful for the growing number of films and shows that offer AD these days.

well, there was no AD up until comparatively recently, so ignoring the whole TV/film industry didn't make you very popular with the sighted community. Some of my favourite shows as a child weren't described and I enjoyed them very much.
That said, I can't decide if shows have just become more visual and harder to follow over time or if I've just gotten older, slower and grumpier. I very much prefer watching with description now if I can, and the only things I tend to watch without are things the family are watching.

I know a visually impaired person that tries to watch movies and shows with AD only. They have almost no sight and like to enjoy media at night. Might as well use the time to enjoy a show where you actually know what's going on. Can't blame them.

I prefer AD. I find it too hard to follow movies/tv shows if there isn't AD and I don't want to burden sighted family/friends. If there's no AD, I either get bored and walk off or my brain runs wild and I get super anxious. In saying that, I've been trying to get into anime, which commonly doesn't have AD and I can generally get an idea of what's happening I guess?

Yeah, I only watched anime with AD that were on Netflix and were originals. I have watched some without it. Depends on the series but some I can see well enough to know what is going on, while others are just a mish mash of shapes and colors.

I grew up without having audio description. So I am used to watching stuff without it. Nowadays though, I prefer watching stuff with AD. But, in my opinion, you don’t need to ignore shows, that don’t have it. Sitcoms for example, work very well without audio description. The same goes for all these crime proceedurals. Of course, you will always miss the small details. Stuff like body language and such. But you will still be able to follow the story of the show.

I am totally blind, and I prefer AD if it is available. I still watch quite of stuff with out it because it is not available everywhere. Audio description has only recently become widely available, so I learned to watch a lot of stuff with out it.

I don't always, but I do tend to ignore media without AD, especially if it could have it or has had it at other times (i.e. re-runs that I can still get access to).

Depends a bit on the genre. That said, because AD was rare for a long time, I'm not used to having it available and sometimes don't even turn it on.

I strongly prefer AD. It's just not fun without it.
Really up to you though, and if you feel like you're getting enough out of it.

I always prefer AD when its available, but I'm not gonna complain too hard if its not, specially if watching with friends or other people.
