GenAlt Chrome Extension: You'll never have to worry about an image not having alternate text (self.Blind)
submitted by Vivid_Perception_143
Hey there,

It's no secret that the story of text captions on images is not a good story and that alternate text today is usually vague or missing. I'm a high schooler right now currently working on GenAlt, a free browser plug-in to generate alternate text for images on the internet that don't have them through AI. Even though AI is far from perfect, I believe having some text caption is obviously better than nothing and that even if it'll only make the internet slightly more accessible than it was yesterday, it's worth it.

When working on the extension, I know I'll need your feedback and help. I've created a coming soon website to find interested users, and **I would greatly appreciate if you could fill it out here**: $1. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!!

Thanks!

Question: Will you sell my data?
Vivid_Perception_143 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Of course not! The only permission I need from you is just to be able to access the URL of whatever images need alt-text on your webpage because I need that information if I want to be able to get a text caption for that image. Thanks for asking, hope this helps!

Google Chrome already has this feature but if the I'll text is not readable or is not enough description it will be great if you can enable it

Oh, that's interesting. It turns out actually that a lot of the VIPs I talked to said Chrome had this feature, but it didn't always work. Will keep that in mind. Thanks!

That sounds cool! My question is. Can it read comics? It'd be really cool to read the text and the description of what's happening.

Thank you so much. It all depends on how well the AI service I'm using is, but I can definitely look into using optical character recognition, etc!
