Exposing caregiver company for their abuse and mistreatment... Any ideas? (self.Blind)
submitted by Cellist_Witty
The caregiving service company that provides caregivers to my low vision pal has been extremely negligent about communicating openly with my friend when call outs happen. When caregivers call out & ask company to confirm that a replacement will sent to her to fill in, they always promise yes and that they will call my friend to let her know about the call out and replacement... But they never actually call her or send anyone. Friend has called their corporate office and senior/disabled services for help... The lady they talk to (who lies to my friend) always manages to spin her story to them so that she claims my friend is lying and she's doing her job providing caregivers... What strategies should we consider for exposing/proving what is going on? Located in Oregon, USA

You might have to set up a security camera or a nanny cam that could record the front door/living room. One that has a time stamp to corroborate the evidence, to show the caregiver is not actually arrived at that date/time.

If it's paid for by the government, call the office of disability at social security. They will investigate it because if they are still billing for the day missed it's fraud.

Realistically, good caregivers are really hard to find (I have heard this same story far, far too many times). It is all the more infuriating because even "bad" care is expensive. If an insurance company or social security is paying for care, let them know - they all have a fraud / abuse line and are *very* interested in people cheating them.

In court, the best documented party wins. Save every email. If your area permits one-party recording (where only one person has to know about the recording), then record every conversation.

Get a bound notebook (where all the pages are bound - not the spiral kind (used in science classes, etc.)) Always and only write in pen. Start by numbering all the pages in the notebook - this makes it obvious if pages go missing. Every day, write the information - if they called, when they showed up, when they left, and any problems - if they were rude, if they ghosted, if they were abusive, on phone the whole time, etc. (don't show this journal to the caregivers). If you call the company, get names and write the summary of the conversation in the journal. In court, this is worth a lot more than a digital log. Have the caregivers sign in and out on a separate form.

Having cameras on the doors are good - even something like a Ring or some of the other Wifi camera companies. My family had caregivers for my grandparents showing up an hour late and leaving a couple hours early and still getting paid for the whole time.... that BS is easier to squash when you see them coming and going on the cameras.

Gather evidence. Record conversations. Check your state laws you nay have to let the other party know that they are being recorded. Just the knowledge of them knowing they are being recorded might be enough to make them change
