TVI - If you're going for the TVI (teachers for the visually impaired) certification, is it worth it to also get the master's degree? Or the COMS certification? Is the pay increase worth the extra effort? Would it be wiser to work towards a master's in SLP or something, financially-speaking? (self.Blind)

Get the masters degree.

There is no pay deference other than you get more for a masters in general. Mine is in special education. If you wanna do coms do it but it won’t necessarily make you more money.

Do you know how much more you get for the master's in special ed? I know it depends on the district. How much is the increase in yours? I've heard some people say it's only $500 per year. That's really not worth the effort, versus changing careers and finding something that pays better.

Mine was an extra 10k per year

was yours a special education masters? or what did you do to get the raise?

And I was able to do it as part of getting my TVI license. Which we are actively looking for TVI so the whole program is paid for.

I went from like 36k to 44k and it was a special Ed masters but all that mattered was having a masters in some education. I’m in New Mexico though.

My TVI classes counted towards the master and then I had to take an extra three classes and that was it. Cost me out of pocket like maybe books and 1500. But also. I could have used teach grant and it would have cost me nothing.

I should say we got an actual raise in general. So it may have been closer to 8k? Either way. It’s worth the Nasters on NM

Because there is a shortage of TVIs, I believe there is a federal grant program that cover most, if not all, of your tuition.

Didn’t know you could become a TVI with out a Master’s. Here O&M is another master’s program.
