For some inspiration, as well as to know what's already out there, you will want to take a look at existing offerings in this space ... primarily Goodmaps Outdoors and BlindSquare for iOS, and Google Maps and GetThere for Android. Except for BlindSquare, these are all free applications.
I'd be curious to see how your capstone would be different or somehow enhance this :)

This sounds exactly like a GPS app on a phone. Why would a blind person need this? Have you done any research into other products that already exist?
