Help! I need a nerdy computer programmer to rescue me!(self.Blind)
submitted by OldManOnFire
I use an HP Pavilion laptop computer with an illuminated keyboard. Yesterday I wrote a post asking how to keep the keyboard lighting on all the time because it goes dark after 15 seconds of inactivity. I asked here in r/blind, in r/computerhelp and r/techsupport. I also looked at HP's website and Googled the question and even poked around in BIOS. I couldn't find a solution so I called my son. He does cybersecurity for the Army and I figured he might know a trick or two, but he pretty much asked Google the same questions and ended up at the same websites I did.
My son says there's probably a driver I can download that would enable me to control the keyboard light.
Now I'm aware of how tech challenged I am. My understanding of drivers and such is very basic and probably wrong so forgive me if I use the wrong words here, but if HP doesn't have a bit of software or a driver or a code patch that gives the user control of the keyboard lights or turns them permanently on, why don't we make one?
Specifically, can a piece of code be written that will turn the illuminated keyboard on all the time? Is there something I can write in the command prompt or a piece of software I can install that will disable the timer and keep the lights on for me?
I have no idea who to ask. I don't know if it's a ten minute fix or a really complex problem. I've noticed many of us in r/blind are software developers so I thought I'd ask here first.
Any ideas?

Have you tried contacting HP's support? If it's a setting that doesn't exist already, they might take it onboard as an idea to include in a future driver update.

I went to HP's contact page but they require me to make an account before I can post a question there and I just wasn't in the mood. I should, though. It's not just a cool feature for the visually impaired - it's almost a necessity.

Quick google turned this up, may be of some help if you have same or similar model as it specifies the exact place to find the option in the bios. Looks like there is an option to adjust the timeout timer.

u/Rumster showed me that page yesterday. I understand HP's reluctance to put too many reconfiguration tools in the hands of clueless users like myself. I get why they keep some settings unavailable to us. I'm guessing they weren't thinking about the blind or VI community when they designed it this way.

It's a bit odd not to make that option available to users. Even regular users would find it useful as well as VI.
I know it's not a great solution when carting around your laptop, but a USB keyboard with LED lighting would work.
I use one and find it invaluable, I can set individual colours for each key if I want. I have letters as one colour, numbers another, functions yet another colour, etc. Mine's quite expensive (HyperX Alloy Elite 2) but there are some pretty cheap options.

I actually reached out to a friend at HP Science labs - They actually have a good accessibility program so it might be a change in the future.

I went to a similar struggle a few years ago, but on my desktop. I got an LED strip, I got a backlit keyboard... Then I learned to touch type. I suggest you do the same, because it'll make it easier for you to use any keyboard you have to and will make you much faster either way.

Let me guess...Pavilion Gaming Laptop by any chance? Because I'd love the same thing too. I bought this laptop specifically because it had a backlit keyboard--you know so I could see it, only to find out this one specific model has a very short timeout on the backlight. It is controlled by a piece of hardware that isn't accessible via the BIOS.

That's the one.
I just wrote a post on the HP community forums explaining how important a backlit keyboard in to the visually impaired community and asked them for a solution.
Will definitely pass it along if they come up with something.

Is yours from Walmart? Because if not, there is a sort of solution that a HP Forum member came up with that helps. It is a script that keeps the disables some sort of polling that happens with the touchpad, which tricks the backlight controller into keeping the backlight on constantly. However, if yours is the Walmart model, I don't know if anyone has came up with a solution that works.
I kind of tried giving up because I've looked multiple times, but dang I guess I'll try some more...lol.

I find pressing the function key or control works well for me. It‘s very easy to find in the bottom left corner, and usually doesn’t input anything to the computer
