Your thoughts on the accessibility of POS systems? (self.Blind)
submitted by kdotcomdes
Hi! I am working on a project to make the POS systems more accessible for those with visual disabilities. The poor accessibility with these machines is something I have thought about for years, as my boyfriend is partially blind and always has trouble with these machines. I am a design student and decided to work on this project as my capstone, and I would love to get as much input as I can from anyone who is willing to talk with me and answer my questionnaire. If you're interested, you can DM if you want to talk more about your experiences with these machines, or anything that I didn't include. I would love to talk! Here is the link to my questionnaire: $1 Thanks in advance for filling it out!

Try to support Apple Pay. In most cases, you don't even have to bother with a pin when using it.

Yes more places accepting apple pay is a goal of mine, but apparently it is so expensive to update the software for that, and Kroger which is one of the biggest supermarket chain has said even when they do updates they are not going to be adding apple pay to them because of expenses which is annoying!

The inaccessibility of these machines have kept me from using my debit card in public tbh. I only use it if I am with a family member.

Same thing with my boyfriend! It sucks because there’s so much technology out there so why isn’t this easier and more accessible?

I havent tried using stuff like Google pay or apple pay but I think using those kinds of payment methods might make it easier. But not all places take them.

Yeah i know they can be a bit more helpful whenever you can use them (which is almost no where near me) but i also know sometimes there are still questions that the card reader asks after the apple pay transaction is complete such as tip or asking for things like a donation

Yeah, I've struggled with these as well. A lot of times they don't even have a dot on the 5 key, which I don't understand since every TV remote in the world does.

Other suggestion is the same as they do for ATMs, and put different symbols for the ok, checking, savings, cancel buttons, et al. Use a cross, cricle, traingle, square, et al. Either on or beside the buttons, or just change the shape of the buttons altogether.

My two cents.

Thank you for your input! I like the button shapes idea, ill be sure to check out ATM set ups some more.
