When do you tip people who assist you?(self.Blind)
submitted by EffectiveYak0
I'm trying to find some guidance on when it is appropriate to tip people who are assisting. For example, I ask the airport staff for assistance getting through TSA and then helping me find my gate. Another example is when I've gone to a store and asked for help finding items that I want to buy.
My gut is that probably no tip is required, but I think in some circumstances it's expected (hotels, airports, etc). Obviously I tip in restaurants and bars.
So when do you tip and how much for what services?

I wouldn't tip the TSA people. This is a part of their job duties. For cab drivers, hotel staff and waiters, and such, I would tip. I'm not sure how I'd approach people in stores, my guess is that is also a part of their job, but it would depend on how much help I needed. If I asked for help in finding an aisle, then no, but if they did go out of their way, like going and getting something off the shelf, I'd ask if they accept tips. If they say no, then I wouldn't. I think often a genuine thank you works wonders too.

Well not TSA, but I have had airport / airline staff walk me through TSA and get me to the gate. Also in big airports they sometimes have powered carts to move people faster. The last time I was n Dallas I heard one of the drivers complain that people never tip them and it got me thinking about it. Maybe I should tip these guys? Although, I never ask for a cart to drive me as my legs work just fine.

If I complain about my job not paying me enough, will you tip me?

Oh, I understand now. I've always emailed the TSA, and they have an officer shepherd me through.

This is a hard topic. If someone sees me struggling to find something in the store, and they offer to help me find what I need. I first sincerely thank them and then hold out a couple of bucks and say let me treat you to a coffee. But sometimes I don’t understand how tip expectations are decided, other than they expect it. Two examples are: Massage therapist and hair stylist. They are both state licensed professionals. I went with my wife to get her “Root touchup” It took about 30 mins of his time the bill was $120.00 plus tip. On the ipad they hand you as they casually say, please select your tip and sign on the bottom. There were three choices for tip, 20, 25 or 30 percent. My wife chooses 25 and signs at the bottom and doesn’t think a thing about it. When we got back to the car… because I’m not that stupid, I ask her why did you choose 25 percent tip? She replied well it’s right in the middle, I don’t want to offend him. Of course I say, he is making $240.00 an hour and your worried about offending him? How much do you Tip your Dentist? Long story short, the hair stylist got 25 percent and I got the silent treatment for an hour!

It’s improper to tip government employees

I tip the airport worker assisting me to the gate.

I think part of this stems from the fact that waiters in the US are legally paid under minimum wage and rely on tips to earn their living. Of course employers have to make up the difference if waiters don't get to minimum wage with tips, but it still sets the tone here.
Not saying it's the best system, but I think that's where it comes from.

Yes, tips are generally associated with the service industry. It provides an incentive for quality service. Waiters/waitresses can often make more from tips. I sometimes tip just to show appreciation for the service provided.

I never tip and I see quite often Americans in other countries trying to force tips on the airport workers whose job it is to do this.
Without meaning to offend this seems like a very American practice to assume that people in other countries are not earning well in their job
So my answer is no I have never tipped and I would not expect a tip someone who is simply doing the job they were hired to do.
