Your thoughts on the Versa Slate (self.Blind)
submitted by rwbeardjr
Hello.
Title says it all. For those of you who use it, what do you think? Is it worth having one?
Thanks.

A little off topic (sorry OP), but I'm just curious what members here think about slate and stylus skills being essential. I could never wrap my head around the damn thing, I can't recall if I was taught it before I went to the brailler but I do remember when I tried it later on in life, trying to compute braille cells upside down was a hassle and I just gave up on it, I feel like I don't really need it.
Feel like this could be a separate topic but ehhh...
But the product looks neat. I can't think of any specific use cases but the fact that it doesn't need paper to function, is cool.

I think of it a little bit like taking pencil and paper around with you instead of using your phone for notes. Is it absolutely necessary, probably not. Might be handy in some situations, sure. I have been meaning to get one even though right now I use my phone for everything quite successfully.

I agree. I am not very fast at using one, but I find it handy at work for marking the top of things when I need to print them for sighted people. It is very easy to lose track of what things are when you can't read them.

I never learned to write with one, I was schooled in the 90's. perkins Brailler for me and that was just how Braille was made, I had no idea people did it manually.

Interesting. I was in grade school up until 2020 and I was taught the slate. It may depend on the teacher you have.

also my locale, I think. I was mainstream educated and had no contact with other bVI people until my late teens, so the idea of writing that way never seemed to occur to anyone.

I was in public school from PreK to the end of my fourth grade year, and that's when I learned it. Thankfully I got out of public school in 2012 and started doing more work on the computer.
