I am in the middle of an employment transition - what do you do for a living? (self.Blind)
submitted by coffee4jesus16
I am nearing the end of my graduate degree. I'm looking to move closer to home and I'm curious what other folks do for work. What do you do that you think works really well with your vision loss?

My vision loss is mild. My employers are surprised when I ask for accommodations like a larger screen, but it does limit things like driving and transportation. I'm trying to find employment that has no driving requirement (a surprisingly difficult task) and is otherwise supportive and functional for higher acuity end of low vision.

I've been looking at universities, since housing is usually available nearby, higher ed institutions tend to have resources like a gym, food, etc. instead of having to catch an uber or bus across town, both their HR and Title IX offices would act as protection (in as far as HR ever acts as protection) and they usually have more resources for accommodations than other governmental or not-for-profit organizations.

Is there a similar type of employment I should be looking at? Is there a non-office but well enough paid type of job that I should consider? I wouldn't mind at all finding a job outside of the office but they usually require driving and/or are substantially lower paid than what I'd find elsewhere.

I've worked for universities, hospitals, and medical societies doing everything from research to policy analysis to governance. All were accessible, some had gyms and food courts if I didn't want to go out, all had great benefits and agreed to accommodations without question.

I'm finishing up the final year of a computer science degree and have accepted a position to work as a software engineer after graduation, probably (hopefully) on the $1 team where I interned over the summer.

How's the interview process? I'm a software engineer looking to interview at Microsoft soon.

I work as an investment supervisor and a pet sitter. I had to cut back on the pet sitting because of the transportation issue and just recently got back to work as an investment supervisor after figuring out a way to accommodate my vision. I work from home full time doing it though so no need to worry about transportation unless there’s something happening at the office I want to go to.

What is your degree in? Telecommuting is a definite possibility in most office situations now.

I'm a former attorney who quit law to work at a tech startup. Now I'm a site reliability engineer (yeah I Know it's funny).
