Is it normal to only need/use a cane at night? (self.Blind)
submitted by Bsmith0799
Edit: I do know how to use the cane, I have been taught how already, its just the ridicule I'm getting in my town that has me questioning this.

I've been considering doing this because I'm having issues with falling off of curbs, into potholes, etc. I tend to be awake overnight and sleep during the day as a result of PTSD and so I will walk my service dog overnight. He isn't a guide dog and can't help much with that stuff. He assists me with PTSD and migraine response.

However my neighbors and other community members have previously made comments that I'm faking my vision issues as a result of me doing this.

We live in a small town type area where everyone knows everyone. So when they see me biking (on the sidewalk, and yes that's allowed here) to run errands during daylight when I can see better, because I can make out if a human is there and I'll pull over and let them pass and I can see cars fine when I'm crossing a street, and the bumps and potholes and issues and stuff aren't as bad because there's shock absorbers on my bike. But then at night they see me using my cane to walk around they accuse me of faking for attention. I had one say I must be walking down to the busier part of town to try to panhandle. A few say I must be faking the service dog too.

So is it really that rare to only need the cane at night? Is it okay to only use one at night? Should I not be using it?

No it's not rare. I have this thing called RP : retinitus pigmentosa. The blind spots are the main feature but a underlying feature is night blindness. Inability to transition at all/after long period of time.

Cane usage is extremely helpful. If you have some of your sight and got a bitchin flashlight. That works too. At least that's what I personally do for midnight walks.

Dogs are great. My dog I took for walks often ran and darted around those mail boxes for apartment complexes. So many times my dumb ass slammed into it.

As for them neighbors .. I have no solution. Even given 100% proof these people think we are scammers.

When I started using my cane 22 years ago I only needed it at night. The issue wasn't how other people reacted it was that I wasn't comfortable using my cane in public.
Do what you need to do to stay safe. It will become more normal over time.

I know several people with nyctalopia who do that, including my boyfriend when he was younger and his vision was a better than today.

Theres probably always gonna be people who just dont understand, some dont try to understand either. You could try to explain it to them If you wanted to.

Just know that this is quite normal actually and you dont have to feel bad about it or anything.

Thanks sometimes it's helpful to get a reality check from others in the blind community, yknow?

I'm grateful I have the remaining vision to still bike during the day but its frustrating when my neighbors act like asses

Its easier said than done but try to not let these people ruin your day/mood. You dont ever have to justify yourself to anyone.

Some people will always find something to be nasty about, If it wasnt you using a Cane theyd find something / someone else to let Out their ignorance. ❤️

Sometimes you just have to free yourself from caring about what others think, especially from those that will never contribute any value to you. When my vision was 20/200-20/400, I could easily pass off as a sighted person if I didn't carry my cane with me. However, the choice to use a cane will never change vision. So you should just focus on using the cane for your benefit & less on imagery.

My daughter started out only needing it at night but now uses it all the time. I know it’s hard but instead of getting mad at these people educate them!

I've tried. They say I'm making it up. That if I can see fine during the day then there's no way my vision could be "bad enough" to qualify as blind.

I've shown them articles, I've shown them my medical documentation.

They say its photoshopped. I tell them to look on their own phones and then they tell me that it must be like Wikipedia and be able to be edited and I must have edited it

It literally doesn't matter what I say they argue, especially my neighbors.

I’m so sorry you have to deal with this! Guess it’s time to ignore and move on.

I guess I was mostly posting for a "reality check" that this is indeed an acceptable use of a cane, not for advice with them. I've long since accepted that some of my neighbors and community members need ignored.
