What does spatial awareness “look” like to people blind from birth? (self.Blind)
submitted by hugePPmaster69420
I recently saw a video of a blind guy going bowling, where he felt the edge of the lane with his foot to orient himself. For those who have never been able to see, how do you keep a mental check of your surroundings? Can you actually make a “picture” in your mind or is it something else? Not being visually impaired myself, I can’t even make my brain try to imagine spatial awareness without a mental picture!

Oh mines absolutely horrible! But that’s because I also have a TBI.
I regularly fall off curbs, run into walls, stub my toes and much more.

Also! Most blind people aren’t 100% blind. Many have some usable vision or can see shadows etc.

I can see and I still do all these things on a daily.

I don't see why you need sight for this, anymore than you need sight to dream. Obviously you can get a better sense of a room spacially by looking at it, but even the sighted can navigate their own homes in the dark, for example.

They're asking about how it compares to a sighted person. Mine is not great. It never really has been. Traveling for me is a lot of mental work and can sometimes leave me feeling exhausted, anxious, and kind of overloaded. That is not everyone's experience isn't everybody's though, and I know a lot of legally blind people from birth who do just fine. In other ways, mine is either above average, or average. It depends on the situation for me.
