Card numbers and vision loss (self.Blind)
submitted by justsomeguy6401
Im curious, how do you guys read your credit / debit card numbers to be able to use them for say online shopping or something where you need to input the actual number. I am really struggling and cant find a way that works.

I use the app, Seeing A.I. it uses the camera to read anything you want also it’s made by Microsoft and does everything locally on your phone no information is sent out to anyone. It will also read labels documents money tell you colors preview a scene for you or tell you if there’s light around. It will also recognize people and tell you what a product is if you scan the barcode.

ohhh !! how did i forget about seeing ai!? thats brilliant. I also love the fact that it is all local... I wonder if it could read card numbers... I guess we will have to find out! thank you :)

Use the handwriting option, it works
retrolental_morose 2 points 1y ago
handwriting and document channels do send the image to the cloud for processing, just FYI

Thanks, good to know

If you have a decent amount of vision, take a picture with your phone or whatever and zoom in. If not, I just asked someone to read it out for me and wrote it down myself.

Fair enough. Good ideas. I guess i should have clarified in my post, the whole purpose of this was so that i didnt have to have anyone else seeing that, and just to have the independence, but still a good option!
HeftyCryptographer21 3 points 1y ago
yeah, fair. Sorry! If it helps, their is no way anyone can remember a whole credit card number in one go!
justsomeguy6401 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
no need to apologize at all! still great ideas and i appreciate them! :)

•add them to apple/android pay. Even if you don't complete the add process, the phone shows you the number to verify.
•My bank shows my full card detail's in its app now.
• I store it in my password manager to copy and paste in when I need it. The bank mails me a braille letter with the number on every 5 years or so when it expires. I've generally memorised it within 3 months of use.

all great ideas, although I am not a braille reader, I love to hear that the bank sends braille letters! i did not know that was something that was done. very cool. thank you for your input !

For home I have all the information in my penfriend, and I keep a tiny slip of braille paper in my wallet with the numbers on it. The only problem I have is the braille wears down after a while, so I have to replace it every few months.
retrolental_morose 4 points 1y ago
I found using thicker card kept the Braille for longer. I use business cards as great long-term wallet braille storage for important details. Don't care what I braille over most of the time!
BenandGracie 3 points 1y ago
That's a great idea! I am going to try that.

woah! thats brilliant. how awesome. thank you for sharing!!

On a laptop just write it down in a text document and save it to your desktop. When you need it you can either have your screen reader say it aloud or you can zoom in on the text.

On a phone you can get a photo of it zoomed in and keep the pic in your gallery.
justsomeguy6401 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Good ideas!
retrolental_morose 3 points 1y ago
storing plain text files on your desktop is perhaps not the wisest of ideas. Less risky now than it would have been due to Windows getting better encryption, but a good password manager or secure storage tool is probably a useful investment.
justsomeguy6401 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
absolutely, trying to think of the best ways to do it but still keep all the information secure at the same time. I agree, plain txt documents are probably not the best choice. I have been recently looking into password managers as well.
codeplaysleep 1 points 1y ago
I believe you can store them in LastPass. You can then use it to one-click fill forms.

funny you mention this because I've had trouble with it on some cards lately. lol. they put ridiculously tiny print and also use fonts that blend right into the cards etc...
justsomeguy6401 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Either the ridiculously tiny text or the fonts... i have noticed as well that its always a weird contrast and is always shiny. I have a fair amount of usable vision but all factors included I have never been able to read them
Otherwise-Anxiety175 2 points 1y ago
I memorize almost everything that I need to use regularly.
justsomeguy6401 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
haha i wish i could say the same!
Otherwise-Anxiety175 2 points 1y ago
It’s a fun and tedious activity 😂

i can only imagine!
