Has anyone had cataract surgery paid for by Services for the Blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by ThermalChaser
I put in an application last month. 3 weeks ago my social worker said I was "approved based on my income" and that my application had been sent to the state office for processing. I've left several messages with them since to see if there's any additional info they need, what the next steps of the process would be, and how long it might take but I have yet to hear back.

My surgery date is 12/5 and I'm supposed to get 3 eyedrops to use ahead of the surgery. They cost $745. I have no idea if they're even covered through the program and I can't get anyone to to call me back to answer that question.

I'm hoping someone else has gone through this process that could shed some light on the process. Is there any chance I'll get final approval before my surgery or should I go ahead and reschedule now? Do these applications get filed away never to be seen again? I'm starting to give up hope.

I've been needing to get it for a long time now and keep putting it off, but it's getting really annoying. I'm not sure what my options are at this point on getting it paid for, but that is crazy how expensive those eye drops are for a common procedure...

I have tried searching through the web and forums to see if anyone had been through this and was surprised to not find anything. It makes me wonder if the program is real or just a service they say they provide to get funding.

UPDATE: I got a call a few minutes ago informing me I was denied for the surgery.

I'm unemployed and all but homeless (Mom passed away 3 months ago and my sister and I have been paying the mortgage just praying they don't notice so we're basically squatters) and can't see a thing out of my left eye so I'm certain if anyone should meet their criteria I would.

I inquired as to the reason for the denial and was told they just don't have the funding. But seeing as nobody on the internet has chimed in to say that they've actually been approved for a surgery through them I'm convinced it really is just a scam. I'm dying to be proven wrong. I asked the technician who measured my eyes about it yesterday and she says yes they do work with them but when pressed admitted she doesn't know any patient who's actually been through the program.

So for anyone who might have their hopes pinned on this as I did, if you have ANY other options consider pursuing them. If you're lucky enough to have family members or even a network of friends that's going to be a safer bet. I have no presence on social media so crowdfunding is not an option and I have no family or friends to lean on as I'm an only child and have always been an introvert.

I'm absolutely gutted right now. Please if anyone has any ideas or can point me to a real charitable organization that could help I would be most grateful.
